Today in Italy was a day of general strike, proclaimed by the grassroots unions in support of Gaza. The protest affected all sectors, from local public transport to railways, ports, schools and public services.
Milan station clashes between police and demonstrators
According to an initial estimate by the Questura di Roma, there were 30,000 demonstrators who took part in the procession for Gaza. Everything took place peacefully in front of Termini station in Piazza dei Cinquecento. A section of the procession then reached the Scalo San Lorenzo and from there reached the ring road. "Now we block everything," the demonstrators chanted. And again: "Free free Palestine"..
In Milan, on the other hand, there were violent clashes between a group of demonstrators and the police at the end of the pro-Gaza procession, which had taken place in a participatory and peaceful manner: about a hundred young people tried to enter the ground floor of the Central Station by throwing smoke bombs and the officers responded with some batons. The clashes continued in the Galleria delle Carrozze: some of the protesters in the pro-Gaza procession threw objects and parts of scaffolding towards the police who tried to repel them with lightening charges and closing the entrance gates of the station.
The evening was marked by clashes in Brescia between demonstrators and police during a demonstration in support of the Palestinian people. The demonstration, which began at 6pm, wound its way through the city streets to the station, which was armoured. The demonstrators approached the officers in riot gear and tried to break through the cordon. The police charged and threw tear gas and managed to drive the protesters away. Glass bottles were thrown and a litter bin thrown at the security forces was also uprooted.
Back in Milan, with a dense firing of tear gas, the police actually cleared out the group of protesters who had been trying to enter the Central Station for about two hours at the end of the procession for Gaza. From inside the station, the police came out into Piazza Duca d'Aosta firing numerous tear gas grenades which sent the demonstrators fleeing towards Via Vittor Pisani. The clashes with the throwing of stones, smoke bombs, barriers, bins and bicycles by the demonstrators continued for hours. With scenes of real urban guerrilla warfare.
