Swiss police: Five Dutch nationals killed in yesterday’s bus crash in the Engadine
“The vehicle crashed into a crash barrier,” said Roman Rüegg, a spokesperson for the Graubünden police.
Five people have died and 40 have been injured – three of whom are in a serious condition – in a bus accident on Thursday in a remote Alpine region of eastern Switzerland, according to the police.
A tourist group of 45 people was travelling on the bus; according to the Dutch media, they were all Dutch nationals. The bus, operated by Oad, was bound for Austria, and the stop in Switzerland had been organised as a day trip.
The accident took place in eastern Switzerland on the stretch of road between Susch and Zernez in the Engadine, near the Swiss National Park.
Zernez is the gateway to the Swiss National Park, a vast, well-preserved Alpine area covering around 170 square kilometres with over 100 kilometres of hiking trails in the Engadine Valley, and is therefore a popular destination for many visitors. The stopover in Graubünden had been chosen for a day’s hike.
The Swiss news website Blick was the first to publish photos of the scene of the accident, showing the vehicle, with Dutch number plates, overturned on its side in a field off the road.
