Ten itineraries for discovering Italia and Europe on two wheels
Valtellina, the slow side of the ebike up to 2000 metres
Those who like to cycle at a leisurely pace to fully enjoy nature and the beauty of the surrounding landscape are spoilt for choice if they travel to the Valtellina, as there are several cycling routes. The 'Sentiero Valtellina' is a route that, together with the 'Ciclabile della Valchiavenna', is over 150 km long and crosses almost the entire province of Sondrio: from Colico, on Lake Como, climbing northwards you reach Chiavenna and from there continue as far as the Swiss border; heading east you reach Morbegno, Sondrio, Tirano, Grosio as far as Bormio in Alta Valtellina. This is a safe route, much of it dedicated exclusively to bicycles, which allows you to discover the beauty of the valley floor, make detours to traditional villages with elegant and fascinating historic centres, and cross wide meadows accompanied by the Adda river, passing vineyards and orchards. Along much of the itinerary, the railway line runs parallel, so the train offers the possibility of getting on and riding effortlessly or returning to the starting point.
The Sentiero Rusca (Rusca Path), on the other hand, links Sondrio, the provincial capital, to Chiesa in Valmalenco It is a historical itinerary that partly retraces the Strada Cavallera, a trade route that connected Sondrio with the Passo del Muretto (2,562 m), the communication gateway between Valtellina and Engadine. The complete itinerary starts in Sondrio and arrives at the Muretto Pass: by mountain bike you can ride as far as Chiesa in Valmalenco and from there on you can cover the second part on foot, mostly dirt roads, paths and mule tracks, passing through San Giuseppe and Chiareggio. Along the route there are several rest stops with information panels and play areas for children. Finally, there is the alternative of the Sentiero Viola, which crosses the entire Valdidentro following the course of the Viola river. The panorama is that of the Stelvio National Park along a simple route, on an asphalt surface and also suitable for families with children. There is also no shortage of cycle paths, such as the Livigno one that winds along the town for a total of 17 km or the Sentiero Frodolfo, which connects Bormio to Valfurva.
