Mountains, rivers, natural parks and historic cities: the Salzburg region is one of the European destinations that have built a true culture of travelling by bicycle, thanks to a widespread network of cycle paths and services designed for travellers on two wheels, with itineraries suitable for both expert cyclists and those who wish to explore the territory at a more relaxed pace on an e-bike. Among the best known routes in this Austrian land is the Tauern cycle path, named after the Hohe Tauern National Park and leading through landscapes dominated by the Krimml waterfalls, among the highest in Europe with a total drop of 380 metres. The cycle path passes through some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the region on a route that is accessible to all and also encounters the historic Dürrnberg salt mines. For those who dream of a stage journey in close contact with the peaks, the Alpe Adria Cycle Path is the perfect cycling route: it starts in Salzburg and after 415 kilometres along old railway lines, tunnels, castles and Alpine valleys it ends its journey across the border in Grado, on the Adriatic coast. No less impressive is the Salzkammergut Cycle Route, a 345-kilometre loop that also touches Upper Austria and Styria. The leitmotif of the trip is also water: along the way, no less than thirteen lakes are encountered and a stop at the Wolfgangsee, surrounded by a landscape that has inspired artists and musicians for generations, is a must.
For lovers of gravel and dirt roads, finally, the Salzburg region offers various possibilities and one of these is the Grimmige Acht in the Saalach valley, a route of about 55 kilometres that crosses meadows, forests and high-altitude landscapes away from traffic.
