Ten routes for exploring Italia and Europe on two wheels
In Sardinia, along the Santa Barbara Mining Trail
Arriving on an island and exploring almost the whole of it by bike. This is possible in Sardinia thanks to the Ciclovia della Sardegna, a project launched in 2014 with the aim of developing a cycling mobility network across the island, promoting the use of bicycles for both daily travel and sporting, recreational and tourist activities. The aim is to make the island more accessible and attractive all year round through more sustainable and varied tourism, linked to the island’s nature, landscape, history and culture. The Ciclovia della Sardegna is a circular route of over 1,100 km designed to connect the whole island. It is divided into 19 routes, 18 of which are entirely cycleable and 1 to be covered by bike and train (CS 1, which runs from Sassari to Alghero). The route allows you to cycle along the coast (from Alghero to Cagliari via Olbia) and inland, alternating between coastal stretches, archaeological sites (such as Barumini) and nature parks, with the option to hire bikes. Along the route and in the surrounding areas, there are various activities to enjoy. For example, you can explore the Southern Coast by cycling a 50-km loop connecting Chia, Domus de Maria and Teulada, set amidst Mediterranean scrub and close to unspoilt beaches. Another option is the Santa Barbara Mining Trail. This is a 550 km loop starting from Iglesias, perfect for MTB and gravel enthusiasts, ideal for discovering disused mines, cliffs and breathtaking views such as the Pan di Zucchero.
