A 55-year-old man from Trevignano (Treviso), who had recently returned from a trip to Congo, died yesterday evening, 16 December, from a suspected case of haemorrhagic fever. The report came from the Public Health Hygiene Service of the Azienda Ulss 2 Marca Trevigiana of Treviso, and diagnostic investigations are underway in collaboration with the Spallanzani Institute of Rome to trace the origins of the infection.

Pending the diagnostic tests, however, the public health measures envisaged for these cases were promptly activated, in agreement with the Ministry of Health, the Spallanzani Institute and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. In addition, the protocol providing for home isolation for the only known contact of the man was activated and the relevant health surveillance was started.

Congolese health authorities: unknown disease is severe form of malaria

Meanwhile, the unknown disease that in recent weeks has claimed several dozen victims in a remote and restricted area in the African country acquires a more precise contour, based on scientific evidence. Indeed, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo has announced that the previously unidentified disease circulating in the Panzi region is "a severe form of malaria". This was reported by the Reuters news agency on its website. Local authorities said the disease had killed 143 people in the southwestern province of Kwango in November. "The mystery has finally been solved. This is a case of severe malaria, in the form of respiratory disease, weakened by malnutrition,' the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
