The guarantees of the 'willing' in Kiev, then call with Trump
After the summit at the White House, the 'willing ones' promised themselves to make haste on the security guarantees to be given to Ukraine, and indeed, in less than three weeks, we are there. Volodymyr Zelensky flies to Paris to see Emmanuel Macron for yet another round of the table, tomorrow, co-chaired with the British ally - some leaders will be there in attendance, others will join remotely. Then, all together, they will connect with Donald Trump.
The ingredients, broadly speaking, are known. First: a strong Ukrainian army, so no restrictions on cooperation with the West. Second: the Old World will play the lion's share, with a mix of 'boots on the ground' and guarantees along the lines of Article 5 of NATO, binding in various ways. Kiev wants no more empty promises. Third: the supply by the US of the strategic material necessary to ground the operation (transport aircraft, satellites, intelligence, air protection). How this will be worked out in detail, we still do not know precisely.
Before the leaders' summit it was the turn of the defence ministers for operational updates. Nato, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte pointed out, is involved in the process 'not because it has a role in security guarantees' but to prevent the Alliance's resources from 'becoming too depleted' and to ensure that they can always guarantee 'collective security'. 'The US,' he concluded, 'is serious, it wants to put an end to the war'.
That said, the plan is tied to reaching an understanding with Russia, either for a truce or a full peace agreement. No one would dream of sending troops to Ukraine while the situation is still hot, if anything to strengthen Zelensky's hand in negotiations with the Kremlin.
Should the Russian president shirk the peace efforts, is the European reasoning, it will be necessary to increase the pressure, especially with even more stinging restrictive measures (involving America).

The post says that Russian forces twice targeted civilian vehicles using drones, killing a 36-year-old woman and wounding another person. According to Filashkin, the artillery attack damaged two apartment buildings, a private home, a shop, a shopping centre some stands at the local market.

"Ukraine needs solid guarantees to keep the peace. Estonia, for its part, will continue to support Ukraine on the road to NATO membership: this is the best guarantee for a peaceful future in Ukraine, a stronger NATO and a safer Europe." This was stated today by Estonian President Alar Karis during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Trump receives Polish President Nawrocki at the White House
Newly sworn-in Polish President Karol Nawrocki is visiting the White House this morning a few months after receiving an endorsement from Donald Trump. Nawrocki's visit is intended to strengthen his relationship with the US president and support the need for the US to maintain a strong military presence in his country. The visit to Washington is Nawrocki's first foreign trip since taking office last month.
According to Nawrocki's office, the White House talks will mainly focus on security issues concerning Poland and the region in general, including the war in Ukraine. Chief of Staff Zbigniew Bogucki said that the president intends to emphasise that neither Russia nor its leader, Vladimir Putin, can be trusted. Poland is also seeking assurances that the US will maintain its military presence in Poland at current levels, even if Washington decides to reduce its military presence elsewhere in Europe.
Nawrocki's meeting with Trump is expected to be mainly political in nature. No concrete results are expected, as the president of Poland has limited executive power, which is largely vested in the centrist-liberal, pro-European government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Lavrov: 'Peace in Ukraine requires recognition of new territories'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that "in order for peace to be lasting" in the Ukraine invaded by Russian troops "what he calls the new territorial realities that have emerged since joining the Russian Federation following referendums" of the Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed, some of which are only partly occupied by Kremlin troops, must be recognised and formalised in an international legal manner", the Interfax news agency reports, citing an interview with Lavrov in the Indonesian daily Kompas. Russia claims to have annexed the four Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia (which its soldiers occupy only in part) by means of so-called 'referendums' that were not recognised by the overwhelming majority of the international community and which are believed to have been held without the slightest respect for democratic standards. Moscow also effectively took control of Crimea in 2014 by force and in a controversial referendum, in violation of international law. "It is necessary to create a new system of security guarantees for Russia and Ukraine as an integral part of a pan-continental architecture of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia," Lavrov also stated, who then in fact reiterated Moscow's opposition to any entry of Kiev into NATO, arguing that Ukraine's "neutral, non-aligned and nuclear-free status must be guaranteed."
