Ukraine: Cardinal Zuppi visits Russian prisoners: ‘The Pope is with you’
The President of the CEI, on a visit to a detention centre in Lviv, brings gifts from Leo XIV
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi visited the “Zakhid-1” camp in Lviv, Ukraine, where prisoners of war who fought in the Russian army are being held. He says he is “bringing Pope Leo’s support” to those who have been captured.
The CEI President, whilst meeting with the prisoners, said that “the Pope is praying that the war may end as soon as possible” and pledged to ensure that “all of you may return home as soon as possible”. “Leo XIV has sent me here to be a voice of hope amongst you and to say that he stands alongside all those who are suffering because of the war.” This is reported by *Avvenire*, following the cardinal’s mission.
The Cardinal’s Mission to Ukraine
The cardinal’s mission to Ukraine will last four days, from Monday 13 to Thursday 16 July. After his stop in Lviv, he will also travel to Kyiv to visit the detention centre – a former Soviet prison – which now houses those who wore Moscow’s uniform in the conflict against Ukraine.
For security reasons – explains *Avvenire*, following Cardinal Zuppi’s mission – it is not possible to ascertain the exact number of prisoners held at the camp: press reports suggest the figure could be as high as five hundred. The cardinal meets dozens of them: from many regions of Russia, but also from various other countries. “Fifty-three nations are represented here today,” the camp’s managers explain to him.
Zuppi brings gifts from Leo XIV to everyone. Three gifts. The first is a key ring bearing the Pope’s coat of arms. ‘I hope you will be able to attach the key to your home to it as soon as possible,’ is the message behind which lies the Vatican’s commitment to the repatriation of soldiers and civilians from both countries.
