United HealthCare Corporation founded in 1974
.In 1974, Richard T. Burke founded the company under the name Charter Med Inc. in Minnetonka, Minnesota, with the aim of providing innovative solutions to improve access to and quality of healthcare.
In 1977, the UnitedHealthCare Corporation was created as a holding company to manage and coordinate the operations of its subsidiaries, including Charter Med. It was one of the first companies to introduce specific programmes for chronic disease management, seeking to combine technology and data to personalise care. In the 1990s, the company pioneered the use of IT tools to improve health data management, anticipating the importance of digitisation.
In 1998, the holding company changed its name to UnitedHealth Group, with UnitedHealthCare as its main operating arm. The company continued to expand both in the US and internationally, acquiring companies such as Optum (specialising in healthcare and IT services) and strengthening its presence in the medical and pharmaceutical services sector.
