US federal judge overturns Trump’s visa ban on immigrants from 75 countries
A Manhattan court has ruled that the visa suspension imposed in January – which barred entry from almost 40 per cent of the world’s countries – was unlawful
A US federal judge has overturned the ban on visas for immigrants from 75 countries that the Trump administration had imposed in January, ruling that the move is ‘contrary to the law’ and beyond the statutory authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
This is according to CNN. In January, the State Department had suspended the issuance of immigration visas for nationals from nearly 40 per cent of the world’s countries – including Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Haiti, Somalia and Russia – with a measure that, it was claimed, would prevent the entry of people who would ‘take advantage of social assistance and public benefits’.
Judge Jeannette Vargas of the US District Court for Manhattan challenged the grounds put forward by the State Department in support of its decision, thereby overturning any visa refusals based solely on those grounds.
