Republican leaders hope to get approval by the end of the weekend, then the measure will return to the House of Representatives for passage of the revised version.

Donald Trump still hopes that the bill will reach his desk for final approval before Friday 4 July, a national holiday.

But the Democratic opposition, a minority in both houses, and some Republicans, continue to criticise tax cuts for the rich at the expense of a working class already burdened by inflation.

The measure extends the massive tax credits approved during Trump's first term and provides billions of additional dollars for defence and immigration control.

To offset the measures, the presidential party plans to cut the public health insurance programme on which millions of low-income Americans depend and to significantly reduce the country's main food aid programme.

Two Republicans sided with the Democrats by passing the measure.

'It will destroy millions of American jobs and cause immense strategic damage to our country!" wrote Elon Musk on X, calling what Trump calls 'the big, beautiful bill' 'totally insane and destructive'.

Trump: "Great victory"

.

"Tonight we witnessed a great victory in the Senate with the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill". US President Donald Trump wrote this on Truth after the US Senate opened debate on the tycoon's spending bill. In subsequent posts, the US leader first said he was 'very proud of the Republican Party tonight', before relaunching his slogan 'Make America great again'.

The 'great victory' celebrated by Trump 'would never have happened without the fantastic work of Senators Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson and Cynthia Lummis', the tycoon writes on Truth.

"They, along with all the other Republican patriots who voted for the bill, are people who truly love our country! As President of the United States, I am proud of all of them and look forward to working with them to grow our economy, reduce waste, protect our borders, fight for our military/veterans, ensure that our Medicaid system helps those who truly need it, protect our Second Amendment, and much more," the US President further emphasised.
