The Volkswagen Group recorded a slight increase in global deliveries during the first quarter of 2025, up 1.4 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 2.13 million vehicles. This positive, albeit modest, figure, however, hides strongly contrasting dynamics in the different global markets, particularly with regard to battery electric vehicles.
The most striking data concerns electric cars, which show a radically opposite trend in the two main world markets: in Europe, sales of Bevs (Battery Electric Vehicles) more than doubled with an impressive +113%, very well also in the United States (+51% but before duties). In China, by contrast, they plummeted by 37%. This gap reflects the increasing difficulties Western manufacturers are facing in the competitive Chinese electric market, where new local manufacturers specialising exclusively in electric vehicles are rapidly gaining market share at the expense of foreign brands.
The results of the Vw Group and the premium brands Audi and Porsche
Overall, the Volkswagen Group's total sales in China decreased by 7.1%, although the German giant still maintains a solid 22% share in the combustion engine segment. The premium brand Audi recorded a 3.4% drop in global sales to 383,401 cars, but saw a +30.1% increase in Bev to 46,371 units. The balance in China was negative: -7% overall and -35.6% for Bevs (only 3,203 units). Electric car orders increased by 86% compared to Q1 2024.
Mercedes-Benz and Porsche also reported sales declines in China. Porsche reported delivery figures on Tuesday: in China they fell 42 per cent to 9,471 units, in Europe by 10 per cent to 18,000 units, with a marked drop in Germany (-34 per cent to 7,495), while in the US they rose 37 per cent to 20,698 units and in emerging markets by 6 per cent to 15,789 units.
As for Mercedes-Benz, it sold 529,200 cars and vans worldwide in the first quarter of 2025, a decrease of 7% compared to the same period in 2024. Sales of Bev vehicles fell by 10% to 45,500 units. Car sales in Europe fell 7% to 148,700 units (-10% in Germany to 45,300), while in Asia they fell 5% to 199-800 units (-10% in China to 152,800).
