The Volkswagen Group recorded a slight increase in global deliveries during the first quarter of 2025, up 1.4 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 2.13 million vehicles. This positive, albeit modest, figure, however, hides strongly contrasting dynamics in the different global markets, particularly with regard to battery electric vehicles.

The most striking data concerns electric cars, which show a radically opposite trend in the two main world markets: in Europe, sales of Bevs (Battery Electric Vehicles) more than doubled with an impressive +113%, very well also in the United States (+51% but before duties). In China, by contrast, they plummeted by 37%. This gap reflects the increasing difficulties Western manufacturers are facing in the competitive Chinese electric market, where new local manufacturers specialising exclusively in electric vehicles are rapidly gaining market share at the expense of foreign brands.

The results of the Vw Group and the premium brands Audi and Porsche

Overall, the Volkswagen Group's total sales in China decreased by 7.1%, although the German giant still maintains a solid 22% share in the combustion engine segment. The premium brand Audi recorded a 3.4% drop in global sales to 383,401 cars, but saw a +30.1% increase in Bev to 46,371 units. The balance in China was negative: -7% overall and -35.6% for Bevs (only 3,203 units). Electric car orders increased by 86% compared to Q1 2024.

Mercedes-Benz and Porsche also reported sales declines in China. Porsche reported delivery figures on Tuesday: in China they fell 42 per cent to 9,471 units, in Europe by 10 per cent to 18,000 units, with a marked drop in Germany (-34 per cent to 7,495), while in the US they rose 37 per cent to 20,698 units and in emerging markets by 6 per cent to 15,789 units.

As for Mercedes-Benz, it sold 529,200 cars and vans worldwide in the first quarter of 2025, a decrease of 7% compared to the same period in 2024. Sales of Bev vehicles fell by 10% to 45,500 units. Car sales in Europe fell 7% to 148,700 units (-10% in Germany to 45,300), while in Asia they fell 5% to 199-800 units (-10% in China to 152,800).

Volkswagen confirms leadership in Europe for Bev

Returning to the Volkswagen Group, in contrast, orders in Western Europe increased significantly by 29% year-on-year, with a particularly marked increase (+64%) for electric vehicles. The Volkswagen Group remains the market leader for EVs in Europe, with a share of around 26%. A positive momentum that also benefits from the sales collapse of Tesla. Indeed, Europe's leading car manufacturer seems to benefit from consumer aversion to Tesla after Musk became more involved in the administration of US President Donald Trump and supported far-right political movements in Europe, such as the German AfD party.

The overall share of electric vehicles in the Group's total sales rose significantly from 6% to 10% in the first quarter, with 216,800 Bevs delivered (+59% compared to 136,400 a year earlier). Sales of plug-in hybrids (Phev) also showed an increase of 15%.

To boost sales in China, Volkswagen plans to gradually introduce new versions of key models such as the ID.3 and ID.4X. At the Shanghai Motor Show this month, it will present the first production model of a new Audi brand and show three new VW models planned for 2026.

Good North America before duties

Performance in North America (+4%), South America (+17%) and Central and Eastern Europe (+8%) was also positive, markets that more than offset the Chinese decline. In the United States in particular, sales grew by 6.2%, possibly due to purchases in advance of the implementation of additional 25% tariffs on car imports.

The order book in Western Europe grew to about 980,000 vehicles in the first three months of the year, with new models of all powertrain types such as the VW ID.7 Tourer, the Cupra Terramar, the Skoda Elroq, the Audi Q6 e-tron and the Porsche 911 enjoying great popularity.
