Volkswagen Group recalls 94,000 electric cars due to fire risk
The initiative was launched after the discovery of faults in accumulators
The Volkswagen Group is about to launch a recall campaign affecting 94,000 electric vehicles in Europe, 28,000 of them in Germany. According to the recall database of the German Federal Transport Authority, the initiative is expected to affect 74,579 models of Volkswagen: ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo and 19,452 Cupra Born. All cars in the recall were produced between 7 February 2022 and 23 August 2024 at Vw's production plants in Zwickau and Hanover.
The campaign was started after the discovery of a defect in the accumulators, such that the individual modules within the high-voltage battery might not comply with the technical specifications. While the problem could have minor effects, such as a reduction in battery life or the switching on of a warning light in the display, a fire risk can also be expected for the Kba. From the documentation, it is not yet clear how the problem was detected, as no accidents or injuries have been reported so far. The defect seems to have been detected in the internal controls that were then reported to the federal authority.
