Iran: US missiles strike oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman – two dead

US President Donald Trump has stated that he has not yet made a decision on whether to launch large-scale attacks against Iran.

“No, I haven’t,” Trump replied to journalists when asked whether he had already made a decision on the matter.

The United States has launched a missile attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, killing two crew members. This was reported by the Fars news agency, citing a source “familiar with the details”. According to Fars, the Americans carried out the attack “believing that the tanker was carrying Iranian gas”. The vessel is no longer able to proceed due to damage sustained to its engine room.

The US Treasury Department, through the Office of Foreign Assets Control, has designated four individuals and nine entities that form key components of the wider network evading sanctions against Iran led by Babak Zanjani. This was announced in a statement from the US Treasury, which stated that Zanjani “has exploited a diversified portfolio to conceal ownership, launder money and expand his ability to transfer funds clandestinely through Iran and abroad”. The Iranian regime “continues to pay a very high economic price for its reckless behaviour, with the rial hitting a new all-time low and inflation soaring”, commented Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who added that, “under the leadership of the President of the United States, the Treasury Department will continue to block economic access to the corrupt elites of the Iranian regime, along with their financiers and accomplices”.

The effects of the turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz are beginning to be felt and are driving new agreements and efforts to establish alternative routes. At the weekend, the first Iraqi minister Ali al Zaidi flew to Washington and returned home with a package of agreements worth 60 billion. Cooperation in the energy and electricity sectors. The main objective is to build an oil pipeline through Iraq and Syria that runs straight to the Mediterranean. Mojtaba Khamenei is more keen than his father, the former Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to acquire a nuclear weapon: he and his government are determined to acquire nuclear weapons. This is according to US intelligence agencies, as reported by the New York Times. “If the conflict were to make it more likely that Tehran would pursue the goal of acquiring a nuclear weapon, it would be yet another serious consequence of the killing of the former Supreme Leader and the steps towards regime change pursued by the Trump administration,” the New York Times points out.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held a telephone conversation with the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, who expressed “the Holy See’s support” for the measures adopted to “ensure security and stability in the country in general and in the south in particular”.

The United States has imposed sanctions on nine companies and four individuals belonging to the business network of the sanctioned Iranian financier Babak Zanjani, who is accused of circumventing sanctions.

The new measures form part of a wider US campaign of military and economic pressure against Iran. The country’s currency has hit an all-time low, inflation stands at over 60 per cent, and US attacks have intensified from the north to the south of the country.

An American soldier will be“sent to hell” for every Iranian citizen killed in the attacks launched by Washington. This is the “new equation” announced by the head of Iran’s Joint Military Command Khatam al-Anbiya, Ali Abdollahi. “For every proud citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran who falls in battle, an American soldier will end up in hell,” said Abdollahi. “The rule that we had previously demonstrated to be effective is, from this moment onwards, considered the definitive and officially declared equation of the battlefield,” the general added to Press TV.

The United States and the United Kingdom are planning to organise a high-level meeting in London next week, focusing on a potential international coalition to protect maritime shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported to Axios by two European diplomats and two other sources with knowledge of the matter.

The closing ceremony and graduation ceremony for the ‘Diplomacy for Development’ training programme took place at the Farnesina. The programme was organised by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ITC-ILO) in Turin, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The programme’s participants were 25 Palestinian diplomats posted in Ramallah and at overseas missions. From 13 to 24 July, the 25 Palestinian diplomats undertook a training programme split between Turin and Rome.

A meeting between Trump and Netanyahu is scheduled to take place in Washington next Tuesday.

The last face-to-face meeting between the two leaders took place on 11 February this year, 17 days before the coordinated attack by the United States and Israel on Tehran, an operation that marked the formal start of the war.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is reshaping the energy landscape of the Middle East, and the clearest sign of this is now coming from the Mediterranean: a shipment of Iraqi-sourced fuel oil that set sail from the Syrian port of Banias is due to be unloaded in the coming days on the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first time that Iraqi oil has reached the US market via the ‘new’ Syria led by former al-Qaeda leader Ahmad Sharaa, who is now fully backed by President Donald Trump. More important than the volumes – which are still marginal – is the route: with the historic change of power in Damascus at the end of 2024, which saw Iran and, to some extent, Russia exit the Syrian arena, Washington has effectively managed to secure a corridor stretching from Mesopotamia to the Mediterranean, passing through the territory controlled by Sharaa’s government – a man the US no longer regards as “a terrorist” but as a “good leader”.

“Whilst the world’s attention is focused on the war in the Middle East, we must not lose sight of Iran’s repression of its own people. Today, the EU has imposed new sanctions on Iranian judges responsible for serious human rights violations, including the persecution of political dissidents and religious minorities.” EU High Representative Kaja Kallas wrote this in X. “We have also sanctioned a leading figure in a cyber group that has facilitated the regime’s suppression of information.”

“Whilst Tehran steps up its internal repression, the EU will continue to hold those responsible to account,” he adds.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun maintains that keeping the UN peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) in the south of the country remains “the best solution for the next phase”. Aoun clarified, during a meeting with the EU ambassador to Beirut, Sandra De Waele, that “should this not be possible, an alternative force would have to be established to take its place”, according to his press office. The Lebanese head of state also called on the EU to “support the implementation of the framework agreement”, signed with Israel under US mediation. “The time has come to put an end to the war once and for all,” Aoun declared, adding that “Lebanon remains committed to the path of reform and, despite the conflict, continues to work towards achieving its set objectives”.

The European naval mission Aspides has today updated its security assessment for the Red Sea following the Houthi militias’ attack on a Saudi oil tanker earlier this week. The threat level in the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, off the coast of Yemen, and in the southern Red Sea has been raised from medium to high, the mission’s headquarters in Larissa, Greece, announced. The assessment for the northern part of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden remains at ‘medium’. The ongoing conflicts in the region, in particular the escalating war between the United States, Israel and Iran, have significantly altered the security situation, and the risk of escalation remains high, according to the mission. “Houthi forces continue to threaten commercial maritime traffic, which could be perceived as linked to the current conflict in the Middle East,” a statement said.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin “assured me” that they would not sell arms to Iran: “In my view”, China and Russia “are not involved in the Iranian issue. If they were, the consequences would be very serious: it would certainly not be in their interests”. Donald Trump made this statement on his social media platform, Truth.

Israeli human rights organisations have issued an “urgent appeal” to the international community to “take immediate action to stop settler violence and prevent pogroms carried out by settler militias and the Israeli army across the West Bank”.

In the statement, signed by Yesh Din, Breaking the Silence, B’Tselem and Peace Now, denounces “an escalation of violence in recent days by settler militias, encouraged and supported by the Israeli army”, involving the burning and destruction of Palestinian property, and the forced eviction of families and communities. The international community has responded to these attacks with “silence and inaction, allowing the violence to continue and intensify”.

Safeguarding Iran’s interests in the Strait of Hormuz remains a priority for Tehran. This was reiterated by the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who stated in an interview with the Tasnim news agency that the country would continue to pursue its course “until the legitimate objectives and demands of the Iranian people are met”. Araghchi explained that consultations with Russia and China are “ongoing and regular” and that today in Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting, he held in-depth talks with Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi. He also confirmed that, via Pakistan, a number of initiatives and mediation proposals had been discussed, whilst pointing out, however, that “the problem between Iran and the United States is not a lack of mediators, but the American approach”. The head of Iranian diplomacy then reiterated that Tehran “will not bow to US bullying” and will not yield to “the language of force, pressure and threats”. “We do not fear threats, we will not bow to pressure and we do not accept the language of intimidation,” he concluded.

A delegation sent by Oman has arrived in Tehran to discuss with Iranian officials an ‘appropriate mechanism for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz’. This was reported by the IRNA news agency. Throughout the conflict launched on 28 February by Israel and the United States against Iran, Tehran has consistently stated its willingness to manage traffic in the Strait of Hormuz alongside Oman.

Donald Trump is becoming increasingly impatient with the war in Iran, which he initially thought would be over in a matter of weeks but is now dragging on with no end in sight, and he appears increasingly sceptical about the possibility of a diplomatic solution and is adopting a ‘revenge mode’ towards the Iranian leadership. This is the portrait of the president painted today by the Wall Street Journal, which cites administration sources recounting how, at a recent meeting in the Oval Office, Trump launched a tirade against Iranian leaders, calling them scum and madmen, and letting loose with a string of expletives. Some White House advisers, the conservative American newspaper adds, now fear that this war – which is driving up petrol prices, amongst other things, a plunge in his approval ratings and the deaths of 18 American soldiers, four in the last few days alone – may wear down the Trump presidency and damage the Republicans’ already slim prospects in next November’s mid-term elections. The fact is, the sources add, that the president is increasingly sceptical that negotiations can lead to a lasting peace, and increasingly convinced that the only thing Tehran understands is military force. And for this reason, the sources conclude, he sees no other option but to continue the air strikes against Iran, and is said to be convinced that he can bring Iran to its knees and force it to accept his demands through the massive bombing campaign he continues to threaten.

The IDF has blocked access to villages and towns in the Salfit Governorate in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. According to local sources, the Israeli Defence Forces have blocked the entrances to Deir Istiya and Haris, north-west of Salfit, and to the town of Deir Ballut, in the west.

The Israeli Air Force carried out air strikes overnight on Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. This was announced by the Israeli military.

According to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the targets struck included weapons depots, arms manufacturing sites and tunnels. The weapons depots were used to store assault rifles, RPG launchers, mortars, explosive devices and other military equipment, the army said.

A ‘large-scale counter-terrorism operation’ by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) is currently underway in the West Bank following clashes near the village of Tell, south-west of Nablus, which claimed the lives of two Israelis and four Palestinians. This was announced by the head of the IDF’s Central Command, General Avi Bluth, whilst speaking to community leaders in the West Bank, explaining that Israeli soldiers are attempting to arrest all Palestinians involved in the clashes. Bluth stated that the latest violence followed “several days of tension”, including fires that damaged 30 homes, an arson attack in Beit Furik and two stabbings. “Four terrorists were killed at the scene, including the terrorist who carried out the shooting,” Bluth said, explaining that the weapon seized had been recovered and was now in the IDF’s possession. “Following recent events, and in particular this morning’s attack, there is concern about a possible escalation throughout Judea and Samaria,” Bluth added, referring to the West Bank. The Israeli army, he added, is conducting counter-terrorism operations to prevent further escalation and is preparing for possible copycat attacks.

Spot rates for Very Large Gas Carriers are rising again as the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz intensifies. Current market prices for chartering a supertanker to transport liquefied petroleum gases, such as propane and butane, for a single voyage are rising once again, according to the maritime intelligence publication Lloyd’s List, which highlights that the large gas carrier segment is “one of the best-performing segments of the maritime transport sector during the Hormuz crisis”. The fall in rates in June proved to be short-lived, and the indices are once again heading towards record levels. The VLGC Gulf–US–Japan index stands at $175,512 per day, up 139 per cent from the low of 25 June; the US-Europe Gulf index stands at $189,338 per day, up 106 per cent from 25 June. The renewed hostilities have caused oil prices to soar, making US propane more competitive than naphtha and creating greater arbitrage opportunities for US LPG compared with Asian and European LPG. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed once again to super-tankers, cargoes are being loaded mainly in the US Gulf and shipped to Asia.

The United Nations Secretary-General has said he is “very concerned” about the resumption of attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea, a situation that risks “further fuelling regional tensions”. This was stated by his spokesperson in a press release.

Antonio Guterres “is deeply concerned about the resumption of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the renewed threats to freedom of navigation”, said Stephane Dujarric, calling on the Houthi rebels to refrain from any further action that might exacerbate the escalation.

Israeli forces have closed off access to several towns and villages in the Salfit Governorate, in the central West Bank, tightening military measures that have hampered the movement of Palestinians and vehicles. This was reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Local sources told the agency that Israeli forces had closed off access to the towns of Deir Istiya and Haris, north-west of Salfit, as well as to the town of Deir Ballut in the western part of the governorate, preventing residents and vehicles from moving throughout the area.

The Pentagon reported on Wednesday on its website dedicated to military casualties that a total of 18 American service personnel had been killed during the war in Iran. Yesterday, the Department of Defence revised the figure down to 14. Three military officials quoted by the New York Times stated that one of the reasons behind the change was the Trump administration’s decision to remove from the list four service personnel killed last weekend — three in Jordan and one in northern Iraq — because their deaths had occurred after the president had declared a ceasefire in April. The Pentagon’s acting spokesperson, Joel Valdez, attributed the change instead to “temporary data glitches” on the website, which he said had been swiftly rectified. Since the ceasefire collapsed, the Pentagon has provided little information on US military strategy and has been slow to release figures on troop casualties. The Pentagon’s last major briefing on the war was in early May. According to the Department of Defence, making public details of Iranian attacks on bases housing US troops would compromise operational security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to leave next Monday for an official visit to the United States and will meet US President Donald Trump on Tuesday at the White House. The Prime Minister’s office announced this today, stating in a press release that Netanyahu will also attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.

The Yemeni Houthi group has denied closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, stating that the naval blockade applies only to Saudi Arabia. “There is no blockade of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, as some claim,” wrote spokesperson and chief negotiator Mohammed Abdul Salam on X.

“Yemen’s position, as announced by the Yemeni armed forces, is limited to a naval blockade affecting only the Saudi side, in response to the siege of Yemen and its refusal to accept any fair solution that guarantees the security, sovereignty and independence of the Yemeni people”, he added.

The Houthis’ decision to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and impose a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia is neither an isolated incident nor a mere local act of retaliation. It is the latest sign of a plan aimed at destabilising the entire Middle East and striking directly at the very heart of global trade. Freedom of navigation, a cornerstone of international law, is being turned into a geopolitical weapon to disrupt trade and energy routes, and to bring our production system and our economies to their knees.

But this escalation has not come out of nowhere. It is the result of a well-thought-out strategy by Tehran, which for years has been using its proxies as tools of destabilisation, transforming militias and armed groups into actors capable of striking on multiple fronts. A decentralised network operating with tactical autonomy but with a common goal, with the sole aim of weakening its neighbours, disrupting maritime routes, and bringing the West and Europe to their knees. Meanwhile, the Iranian theocracy continues to repress its own people, massacring young people – and above all young women – who are demanding freedom and rights – a moral tragedy that should have mobilised the international community but which has, all too often, been ignored – and aims to throw the entire region into turmoil through instability, conflicts, naval blockades and attacks on strategic infrastructure.

Two Cosco supertankers have passed through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait after obtaining authorisation from the Houthis. This was reported by the maritime intelligence publication Lloyd’s List. “Two Cosco VLCCs carrying Saudi crude oil have passed through the Bab el Mandeb Strait after securing authorisation from the Houthis, with a third tanker from China Merchants now heading south.”

Chinese oil tankers heading for the Saudi port of Yanbu to load their cargo are currently on hold, “suggesting that negotiations regarding the incoming vessels have yet to yield results”.

The tanker Torm Innovation, flying the Danish flag and designed to carry petroleum products, will sail to Asia via the Suez Canal after loading naphtha at the Saudi port of Yanbu, on the Red Sea, bound for Japan. The decision, the shipowner explained, is due to the security situation in the southern Red Sea. “This reflects our cautious approach to crew safety, which remains our top priority,” said a Torm spokesperson.

The Department of Justice has withdrawn the subpoenas issued against several New York Times journalists who, in recent weeks, had written articles on security concerns relating to the new Air Force One, donated by Qatar to President Trump. The decision follows the concerns raised by Judge Arun Subramanian regarding the government’s handling of the subpoenas. Subramanian explained that there is nothing to prevent the government from issuing new subpoenas, provided that the correct procedures are followed.

According to a statement read out on state television, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has urged the populations of countries bordering Iran to stay away from bases housing US troops, whilst also asking them to report the locations where these troops are stationed.

The Israeli Defence Forces have announced that they have deployed five companies of soldiers to the West Bank following this morning’s fatal shooting in the Palestinian village of Tell, in which one Israeli and four Palestinians were killed, according to reports from the Israeli army and the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The army has imposed a lockdown on Tell and Nablus and has also carried out operations in Beit Furik and Tubas.

Four Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed in a shooting in the north of the West Bank. This has been reported by medical sources, who added that several other people were injured. The circumstances of the shooting, which took place near the city of Nablus, remain unclear at this stage.

In recent days, there has been an escalation of violence in the Israeli-occupied territories. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah has stated that the four Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces. The Israeli emergency services, Magen David Adom, have not specified who killed the Israeli man.

Bahrain sounded its air-raid sirens for the second time this morning, warning residents to take shelter from the detected missile launches. Earlier this morning, the Gulf nation had sounded the air-raid sirens for the first time, just a few hours after the United States had declared the 13th consecutive night of attacks against Iran to be over. Following the Centcom air strikes, Tehran claimed to have targeted US military bases in both Bahrain and Jordan using drones.

Andy Burnham’s new government has given assurances that the UK is “ready to defend itself 24 hours a day”, in response to warnings issued in recent hours by Tehran against granting British bases to US forces engaged over the past two weeks in a renewed wave of air strikes on Iran. London’s response, issued in statements from Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence, follows a declaration by the IRGC (the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or Pasdaran) in which it described those bases as “a legitimate target”. Burnham’s Labour government, like Keir Starmer’s previous administration, insists that it granted the use of the bases to its American ally for “defensive operations”. This justification, adopted in recent months following a U-turn on a fleeting partial refusal to grant access to the bases – which had provoked the wrath of President Donald Trump – is, however, the subject of controversy and criticism from quarters of the British peace-loving left.

An Associated Press journalist heard at least seven explosions and saw flames rising near a military base housing US forces in Erbil, in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, in northern Iraq. According to the Associated Press reporter at the scene, the explosions began at around 9.30 am local time. The reporter observed at least four plumes of black smoke rising from areas near or within the base. At present, there are no reports of any casualties, nor of the cause of the explosions.

On Thursday, the US armed forces announced the thirteenth consecutive night of attacks against Iran, as clashes over shipping lanes intensify. The offensive was launched after Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed to have struck two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea; an incident that risks widening the conflict involving Iran, just as the international price of oil has surpassed $100 a barrel. Shortly afterwards, Iranian state media reported explosions along the strait, in the towns of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas – where two people were reported injured – as well as further north-west, near Andimeshk, Omidiyeh and Firuzabad. US Central Command announced that the latest operations had concluded shortly before 5 am (local time).

US air strikes have targeted the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guards’ Navy in northern Iran, without causing any casualties. This was stated by local authorities, as reported by the IRNA news agency. “This morning, the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guards’ naval forces in Zibakenar was struck by American enemy projectiles, which damaged some equipment,” said provincial official Ali Bagheri. Zibakenar, a tourist resort on the Caspian Sea, is located about 350 kilometres from Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that any country that ‘participates, cooperates with or assists’ the United States will be held accountable by Tehran. ‘Any participation, cooperation or assistance in the commission of an act of aggression against Iran will result in the international liability of the parties involved’, said Abbas Araghchi, adding that Iran “reserves the right to take all necessary measures in the context of legitimate self-defence”, during a speech in Kyrgyzstan at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Donald Trump’s intention to use frozen Iranian funds to compensate for damage to ships attacked in the Gulf sets an ‘explosive precedent’. ‘The seizure of another country’s assets to settle future debts constitutes an explosive precedent,’ wrote Araghchi, referring to Trump’s statement that ‘with immediate effect, all damage caused to ships or cargo vessels will be paid for using Iranian assets controlled by the United States’.

‘Take note of this statement: until further notice, from this moment onwards, any damage caused to ships, cargoes or related assets will be compensated using Iranian funds held and controlled by the United States.’ So said US President Donald Trump in a social media post that further escalates tensions with Tehran. It is unclear what legal mechanisms Trump intends to use to access and dispose of these funds, but he maintains that doing so is ‘the right and fair thing to do’.

Only one oil tanker passed through the Strait of Hormuz yesterday – the lowest figure since 7 May – against a backdrop of growing tension between the United States and Iran. This was reported by the Israeli media, citing Kpler’s vessel tracking data published by Reuters.

Press sources report that air-raid sirens have been activated in the Jordanian capital, Amman: this is according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim. According to initial reports, a military base called Muwafiq al-Sultani in Jordan has been hit by a missile strike. The repeated and intense explosions in Jordan, following the attack on the US base, have not ceased and are continuing. According to reports from the Al-Aqsa network, cited by the Iranian news agency IRNA, loud explosions can be heard coming from the port of Aqaba and other areas of Jordan. At the same time as the explosions, fighter jets are flying over Jordan in an attempt to intercept aerial targets. The media report that Iranian missiles have struck the Muwafaq Salti and King Faisal bases.

The United States has concluded its thirteenth night of strikes against Iranian military targets, carried out by forces under the US Central Command (Centcom), at 9.00 pm Washington time (3.00 am on Friday in Italia). According to a statement posted on X, Centcom “struck Iranian military command centres, drone depots, communications networks, coastal surveillance posts and maritime capabilities, with the aim of further reducing the threat posed by Iran to civilian seafarers and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz’. Tehran is rapidly rebuilding infrastructure damaged by air strikes carried out in recent months by the United States and Israel, ranging from missile sites to logistical infrastructure. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing Israeli and Western officials and an analysis of satellite imagery. According to the newspaper, the satellite images show restoration work at missile bases, bridges, ports and production facilities. At Kangavar, in western Iran, photographs from Planet Labs had documented damage in March to the access roads of a missile base and the connecting road. A few weeks later, images from Airbus showed a resurfaced road and new tunnel entrances.
