Key points
It will be Manuela Mattioli who will take up Senatùr Umberto Bossi's legacy in Parliament. Councillor for Culture in Busto Arsizio, second among the unelected, she will take the seat in Parliament of Umberto Bossi, the founder of the Carroccio, who died last Thursday at the age of 84. Mattioli, a long-standing Lega militant in Busto Arsizio, was first a town councillor, then councillor for Culture, deputy mayor and, again, town councillor for Culture, Identity and Economic Development. The announcement of her takeover of the senatùr's seat in the Chamber of Deputies was made in the Chamber by Giorgio Mulè.
After Matteo Luigi Bianchi's step back
The seat in the Chamber of Deputies will, therefore, be assigned to Maffioli after the decision by Matteo Luigi Bianchi, the first of the unelected, not to take over the Senatur's seat. "It is a choice that stems not from a renunciation, but from a conviction: today I can be more useful to the territories, continuing the work that I am carrying out, every day, between Lombardy and Europe," Bianchi stressed in a post on Facebook.
Journalist, part of Maroni's 'dreaming barbarians'
Born in 1971, a professional journalist, Manuela Maffioli is a historical face of the League in Busto Arsizio. A woman at the forefront in promoting the area's cultural heritage, she has undertaken a series of initiatives ranging from improving the management of the library system to the B.A. Film Festival (Busto Arsizio Film Festival). A graduate in Modern Literature from the Catholic University with a specialisation in Social Communication, she joined the League in the late 1980s. She was close to the positions of the 'dreaming barbarians', the 'current' linked to former minister Roberto Maroni - who died in 2022 - who pushed for a renewal and generational change in the League and opposed the management of Umberto Bossi and the so-called 'magic circle'. Their symbol was a white rubber bracelet.
A big thrill to take over from Bossi
'A great emotion, a great honour and an equal responsibility, especially taking over from Umberto Bossi, whose meeting, when I was not even 18 years old, determined my life,' was Manuela Maffioli's first comment. Maffioli. The Busto Arsizio councillor wished to emphasise the total harmony with her colleague who preceded her on the list, confirming the movement's unity: 'A fraternal embrace to Matteo Bianchi, with whom this journey began in an election campaign that we shared and with whom I have been in touch in the last few hours with great serenity.
