Who was Matilde Lorenzi, Italian hopeful, who died after a fall

Matilde Lorenzi, 20, was a skier of the Italian Army Sports Centre, who deceased after a fall on the slopes of Val Senales, in South Tyrol, during a training session. Her condition immediately appeared serious: urgently hospitalised, she was transferred to the intensive care unit of the San Maurizio Hospital in Bolzano, where she died during the night.

Born in Villarbasse (Turin) and member of the junior women's team, last season she won the Italian overall and youth super-G title in Sarentino, finished sixth in the downhill and eighth in the super-G at the junior World Championships in Chatel, France. She boasts an 11th place in the super-G in St. Moritz in December 2023 as her best finish in the European Cup.

Her sister Lucrezia Lorenzi, currently in the third national team, is also a skier.

A speed trial specialist originally from Sestriere, Matilde Lorenzi made her European Cup debut on 11 February 2021 in Santa Caterina Valfurva in the downhill; her best finish in this event was an 11th place in the super-G in St. Moritz in December 2023.

Matilde Lorenzi was the victim of a fall during a training session the team was conducting on the Gravald G1 slope in Val Senales. Immediately rescued, she was transported by helicopter to the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano, where her condition immediately appeared very serious. At the hospital, Lorenzi underwent emergency surgery to repair the craniofacial trauma. In the fall, she hit her head. Initial investigations carried out by the Silandro carabinieri ruled out the presence of plants or barriers at the edge of the slope, and the slope's course appeared regular.
