Wise marks a historic milestone in neurosurgery: it is the first company to have obtained the CE marking according to the European Medical Device Regulation (Mdr) for a cortical strip intended for intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (Ionm). The device in question is the Wise Cortical Strip (Wcs), an innovative electrode designed to record, monitor and stimulate electrical signals on the surface of the brain during surgery.
"We are the first on this type of device - cortical grids - to have obtained the CE marking according to the new Mdr regulation," emphasises Luca Ravagnan, CEO and co-founder of Wise.
"We are very happy that we were able to obtain the new Mdr certificate, because this allows us not only to continue selling our products beyond 2027, but also to work on product evolution, which was no longer possible with the old certifications.
The Wcs, already authorised in Europe under the previous Mdd directive and approved by the Fda (US) and Tga (Australia), represents a technological breakthrough in the field of neurosurgery. Unlike traditional strips, which are made of rigid metal elements encapsulated in thick silicone, the Wise Cortical Strip uses stretchable platinum contacts embedded in a thin film of soft silicone. This structure makes it extremely flexible and perfectly adheres to the brain surface, ensuring greater stability and precision.
The increased conformability of the device leads to significant clinical benefits, particularly in epilepsy surgery and oncology, by improving the localisation of epileptogenic areas and the detection of brain signals due to lower impedance.
