With the winning number 6 in the Lecco Superenalotto draw, the State takes in 44.6 million (equivalent to four days’ worth of discounts on diesel)
The Superenalotto jackpot will generate tax revenue that could fund a further reduction in fuel duty for a number of days, to the benefit of Italian motorists.
The Superenalotto jackpot of 6, won on Friday in the province of Lecco, worth over 223 million euros, is putting a smile on the government’s face – and not just theirs. The lucky tax applied to Superenalotto winnings guarantees the Treasury an immediate 20 per cent share, which, all things considered, amounts to 44.6 million euros for the game’s second-biggest win ever. This is an unexpected windfall which, if desired, could help the Government in its ongoing efforts to ease the burden of high fuel prices on Italian motorists.
Like 4 days’ worth of excise duty
With over 44.6 million, in fact, it might be possible to secure a further four days’ discount on diesel, thereby extending the expiry date of the ‘excise duty cut’ from Thursday 17 to Monday 21 September, right on the eve of the long-awaited ruling by Eurostat and Brussels on the state of Italy’s accounts and whether or not the country will exit the infringement procedure. Four extra days that could prove useful in better defining the much-heralded targeted aid for all those taxpayers who, for work reasons or due to the nature of their business, cannot do without their cars or motorbikes.
A specific regulation
Certainly, there is no automatic mechanism for the State to collect the ‘lucky tax’ generated by the Lombardy taxpayer’s win, and a ministerial decree along the lines of the variable excise duty is certainly not enough. To channel the state’s new windfall into support for Italian taxpayers, an ad hoc provision would be needed to satisfy a large proportion of Italian motorists, who are ready to thank the lucky resident of Oggiono (Lc) who, from today onwards, will certainly no longer have any trouble filling up, whether with diesel or petrol.
