Shouldn’t young children be out in the sun? Here are some tips and advice on how to protect them

Playing outdoors is good for young children’s physical and mental health: it helps them reach key milestones in their emotional and cognitive development, provides a setting in which to develop and test their skills, and aids the development of their motor skills.
For this reason, time permitting, we should try to take our children outdoors every day and let them play freely. But, especially in summer, is it safe to let children be out in the sun? Whilst it is true that the sun offers real benefits, young children’s skin is thinner and the cells that produce melanin – the natural defence against ultraviolet (UV) rays – are less responsive than those of an adult. For this reason, young children’s exposure to the sun must be managed according to specific guidelines, particularly during the first few months of life.
What are the risks of sun exposure?
Children’s skin is thinner and more delicate, and the cells that produce melanin – the pigment that protects against ultraviolet rays – are less responsive than those of adults. Exposure to the sun therefore carries various risks, particularly for young children. The first risk is undoubtedly sunburn, which is also the most immediate consequence.
In the case of a first-degree burn, without blisters, apply emollient or cortisone creams. In the case of a second-degree burn, where blisters have formed, go to the nearest A&E department; if you are on holiday, consult your paediatrician or a dermatologist for any necessary treatment.
Other consequences are medium- and long-term in nature, and will become apparent in adulthood. These include premature ageing of the skin and the risk of developing skin cancer. Exposure to high levels of sunlight during childhood is, in fact, a major risk factor for melanoma, a very aggressive form of skin cancer, although exposure in adulthood also plays a role.
