AirPods, real-time translation also arrives in Italy
In a month it will be available for everyone after the European DMA-related delays
One of the most eagerly awaited functions among those announced during the September event is arriving in Europe, including Italy. That is, real-time translation on Airpods. Announced two months ago, this feature was not available in Europe due to the limitations of the European DMA, which Apple recently called for to be removed.
As of today, it can be tested via the Apple Developer Program, while next month the update will be open to everyone via the Apple Beta Software Programme.
Real-time translation arrives on the new AirPods Pro 3, as well as AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence enabled. With active noise cancellation it allows for face-to-face conversations in certain languages with Apple Intelligence taking care of live translations and spatial audio. Ideal if both people are wearing them. If, on the other hand, one of the conversation partners doesn't have it, they can see the live translation in their language on the iPhone.
When talking to someone in a different language, iPhone listens and translates the sentence, playing the audio translation immediately in the AirPods. A bilingual transcript of the conversation also appears on iPhone's display. Everything happens locally, without sending the data to Apple's servers.
Real-time translation on AirPods is available in Chinese (simplified and traditional Mandarin), Korean, French, Japanese, English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and German. Apple wrote in a note: 'The availability of real-time translation on AirPods has been delayed for users in the European Union due to additional technical work needed to comply with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act.
