The perfect fibre for tackling the sea? Wool. What may seem like nonsense is instead confirmed, for five years now, by the clothing worn by the team of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the monohull starring in the Final Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America's Cup, which kicks off today in the sea off Barcelona. Luna Rossa's technical partner is in fact Woolmark, which certifies the 100% Merino wool used for the uniforms of the crew led by skipper Max Sirena.
Wool has actually been used for centuries by sailors to protect themselves from humidity and wind, as told by jumpers made from the wool of sheep in the British Shetland Islands, the heavy 'duffle coat' of the British navy, the uniforms of the Italian Royal Navy. Indeed, wool is breathable, dries quickly and is anti-odour. It also has thermoregulatory properties, so much so that in very hot climates it can disperse body heat more than other fibres, and is able to absorb harmful UV rays.
The kit created for Luna Rossa includes T-shirts, hoodies, shorts, leggings, a waterproof jacket, and an ultralight windbreaker, weighing 60 g/m², made windproof by the density of the weave, and in which 55% Merino wool guarantees superior breathability during performance. A special cycling suit was also provided for the team's training, which allows better temperature regulation and moisture management advantages.
Last May, Woolmark also collaborated with Arena for a beachwear collection consisting of five swimming costume models in Merino wool, and previously with Vilebrequin for a capsule of swim shorts.
