Closure by the end of 2025 of the Beko Europe plants in Siena and Comunanza (Ascoli Piceno) and the cold line in Cassinetta (Varese). There will be 1,935 redundancies in total. This is what was reportedly communicated by the top management of the former Whirlpool at the ministerial table underway in Rome, at the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, where the trade unions are also present.
The closures and redundancies would be foreseen in the plan for Italy communicated by the Turkish multinational, an announcement that comes after 12 years of layoffs between former Whirlpool and Beko Europe.
On Monday, 18 November, about a hundred employees of the former Whirlpool plant in Siena took part in a protest march behind the banner 'Rsu Beko Europe in struggle' and with the slogan 'We never give up'. The demonstration marched along the road leading to the Siena factory, whose future is uncertain with respect to the ownership plans. In the afternoon, a delegation of workers and unions then met with the President of the Province of Siena, Agnese Carletti.
Mimit rejects Beko Europe's business plan
"We do not agree and cannot accept the plan presented today by Beko Europe's top management. We will enforce the golden power, which for us means protecting employment". Thus the undersecretary Fausta Bergamotto after the plan illustrated at the table at Mimit by the Beko Europe Group, born from the acquisition of Whirlpool Europe by the Turkish Arçelik. "We will not accept conclusions that are not shared with the trade unions", "we will exercise every possible type of action so that the ownership changes strategy and, if necessary, we will also resort to the reference shareholder" to "demand respect for the interests of our country".
