Bernini and the Barberini: when power meets genius and the Baroque is born
Through the dialogue between a genius and his patron, the exhibition renders the image of a Rome that becomes the stage for the artistic movement
Key points
There is a moment in the history of art when everything changes: forms are set in motion, matter seems to breathe, emotion becomes spectacle. It is there that the Baroque is born. And it is precisely at that precise point - between ambition, faith and extraordinary talent - that the exhibition 'Bernini and the Barberini', hosted at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, takes place.
The dialogue between a genius and his patron
After the success of Caravaggio 2025, Rome returns to celebrate one of its most brilliant sons, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, but telling his story from a new perspective: the deep connection with the family that shaped his destiny, the Barberini. The exhibition is a unique account of how an artistic era was born. Through the dialogue between a genius and his patron, the exhibition conveys the image of a living, ambitious Rome in transformation. Of a city that, thanks to Bernini and the Barberini family, became the stage for the Baroque. And, even today, continues to amaze.
An anniversary that speaks to the present
The exhibition, curated by Andrea Bacchi and Maurizia Cicconi, comes at a symbolic moment: the 400th anniversary of the consecration of the new St. Peter's Basilica (1626), a pivotal event in Baroque Rome. It is the moment in which Bernini leaves an indelible mark, thanks to the support of his most important patron, Maffeo Barberini, who became Pope Urban VIII. And it was not just an artistic relationship, but a cultural and political alliance that changed the face of the city. One of the most extraordinary elements of the exhibition is the network of international loans: from the Louvre to the National Gallery, from the Vatican Museums to the Paul Getty Museum.Works rarely seen together dialogue for the first time, reconstructing an unrepeatable artistic season.
A journey to the birth of the Baroque
The exhibition "Bernini and the Barberini" is conceived as a narrative and immersive journey that, through six thematic sections, follows the evolution of the artist and the construction of a language destined to dominate the 17th century. The route opens with Bernini's youthful works: a workshop in which the transition from Mannerism to the invention of a new style is perceived. It is here that talent takes shape and begins to distinguish itself.
The discovery of genius
The meeting with Maffeo Barberini marks the turning point. Bernini's talent found a supporter capable of recognising its revolutionary scope. Thus were born works in which dynamism, theatricality and emotion became the hallmark of the Baroque.
