That mosaic of experiences in nature among the islands of western Sweden
Between rock carvings and contemporary sculptures
The region is home to one of the country's most fascinating Unesco sites: the famous Bronze Age rock carvings at Tanum. Thousands of images carved into the granite tell the story of life over 3,000 years ago. Today, the area is an open-air museum where visitors can wander among the carved rocks, completely immersed in an impressive natural landscape. Further south, on the island of Tjörn, is the Pilane Sculpture Park, ranked among the most important European open-air parks dedicated to contemporary sculpture. In an ancient burial site, among grazing sheep, an exhibition is staged every summer where monumental works are integrated into the wild coastal landscape. This year, the park celebrates its 20th anniversary with British sculptor Tony Cragg as the main artist. Pilane 2026 will open on 14 May and close on 27 September, while the area remains accessible all year round for rejuvenating nature walks.
