It is a bit like the logic of the communicating vessels experiment applied to politics. Voters of one party in the next election round decide to give their vote to another political force. It is the dynamic of 'flows'. In the European elections that took place on 8 and 9 June Forza Italia-Noi moderati registered 9.6 per cent of the consensus, up from 9 per cent in the 2022 general election. If one scrolls between the lines of the special Radar with the voting flows of SWG, one element leaps to the eye: the formation led by vice-premier Antonio Tajani also registered consensus from Action-IV. In particular, 6 per cent of that 27 per cent of votes from other political areas in the previous electoral round had aimed precisely at the Renzi-Calenda duo and the project, which later fell through, of the Third pole.

But the two centrists have also contributed to giving fuel to the Pd engine: according to the SWG survey, in fact, despite a negative balance in the exchange with AVS (Green and Left Alliance), the Dems increased their vote baggage by subtracting consensus from M5S and Action-IV. The PD went from 19% in the 2022 Politics to 24.1% in the 2024 European elections. Looking at the composition of the Dem electorate in the last round of elections, of the 31% of consensus coming from other political areas, 5% voted Action-IV, 9% voted Five Star, 6% voted for other lists and 11% abstained.

Fdi still drains some votes to Lega and Forza Italia

The SWG survey also outlines other insights. With regard to Fratelli d'Italia, for example, the document explains that the party led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni maintains a large part of the consensus of 2022 and drains some votes to Lega (8%) and Forza Italia-Noi moderati (8%).

The League cedes almost a point to Fdi

.

The League, which went from 8.8% in the 2022 Politics to 9% in the 2024 European elections, gave up almost a point to Fdi but recovered from abstention and minor lists.

M5s: less than half of the Five Star voters of the 2022 policies confirmed their choice

.

As for M5s, which went from 15.4% in the 2022 Politics to 10% in the 2024 Europeans, less than half of the voters in the 2022 Politics confirmed their choice in the 2024 Europeans, more than a third stayed at home. In detail: 40% of the 2022 M5s electorate confirmed their vote for the Five Stars; 13% voted for a centre-left party, 6% for a centre-right party and 41% voted for another party or did not vote.

Five Stars lost two million votes; over half a million more for Avs

Fratelli d'Italia is now close to 29%, surpassing the result of the 2022 elections, when it was the first party with 26%, but - with counting almost complete, when the data of a hundred or so sections are missing - compared to two years ago it has 600,000 fewer votes, from 7.3 to about 6.7 million. Votes that weigh more now due to abstention: far fewer Italians went to the polls, at the political elections the turnout was 63.9%, at the European elections only 49.69% voted. On the other hand, 2 million fewer votes than in the political elections were cast by the M5s, which had obtained 15.4% with 4.3 million in the political elections, and now has almost 10% with 2.3 million votes. In contrast, the Green and Left Alliance gained over half a million more votes in this round: it went from 3.64% with 1 million votes to 6.7% with over 1.5 million votes. The Democratic Party also gains compared to the 2022 elections both in percentage and number of votes: from 19% with 5.35 million votes to 24% with around 5.6 million. In the internal derby within the majority, Forza Italia is stable in terms of absolute votes compared to the last election with founder Silvio Berlusconi (while gaining more than one point in percentage terms), while the League goes from 2 million 470 thousand votes to around 2.1 million. Although it is impossible to compare the formations, in absolute terms the centre loses more than a million votes: at the political elections Azione and Italia Viva stood together and obtained 7.8% with 2.2 million votes, while +Europa in the centre-left coalition and obtained 2.8% with 800 thousand votes, while at this round the Azione list stops at 3.4% with less than 800 thousand votes and Stati Uniti d'Europa at 3.76 with less than 900 thousand votes.

The impact of abstention on individual parties

.

The affluence in these European elections was 49.69%: a drastic drop from 56.09% in the previous elections in 2019. SWG highlights the percentage of abstainers among the voters of the major parties in 2022. It starts with 35% of M5s, followed by 30% of Azione-IV, 26% of Forza Italia, 25% of Fdi, 24% of Pd, 23% of Lega, and 22% of Avs. It was the first time for European elections in Italy that the percentage of voters fell below 50%.
