Experiential destinations 2026: India, Colorado and Costa Rica top the list

In the next twelve months, travel will once again be, more than ever before, a matter of inspiration, says American Express Travel, with its annual list of trending destinations based on bookings made globally by its customers in 2025, whose focus is on new but well-orchestrated experiences, far from improvisation. Nearly nine out of ten travellers say they are most enthusiastic when heading to a destination or hotel they have never visited before, but in general there is a prevailing desire to explore both emerging destinations and familiar places, but seen through different eyes. And the destinations chosen for the New Year reflect this dual soul and range from the Indian Himalayas to the Okinawa Islands, from the Papagayo Peninsula in Costa Rica to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, passing through iconic cities such as Marrakech, Panama City or Las Vegas. It is precisely the gambling capital that confirms itself as one of the most solid destinations, with an offer that combines entertainment, world-class catering and an unrivalled hotel system. But alongside the great classics, there are places with a more intimate profile, such as Killarney in Ireland or St Julian's in Malta, with Marbella completing the Mediterranean picture between Andalusian charm and gastronomic tradition. A key element is the role of the hotel as an extension of the destination: not just a place to sleep, but a space capable of narrating the local context. 87% of travellers say they look for establishments inspired by the local culture, while 80% prefer those perceived as "hidden gems", far from the most crowded circuits.
