Former Prime Minister Starmer resigns as an MP
“I will now focus on international affairs, including defence, security, trade and technology in a rapidly changing world,” said Keir Starmer, as quoted in the Camden New Journal
Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as an MP and his retirement from politics, a decision that will lead to a by-election in the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras.
In a statement to the Camden New Journal, Starmer said it had been a “great honour and privilege” to represent the constituency for 11 years, explaining that he was ready to “pass the baton to a successor”.
The former Prime Minister, who had resigned from office during the summer and had been replaced by Andy Burnham, had initially told the BBC that he intended to remain an MP until the next general election. Starmer has now announced that he intends to focus his efforts on international affairs, particularly in the fields of defence, security, trade and technology.
She also gave her assurance that she would continue to work towards combating violence against women and girls, an issue she has been working on since before she entered Parliament.
His departure from the House of Commons now paves the way for a by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency.
