A Russian airstrike killed 24 civilians at a pension distribution point in Yarova, a village in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities reported, while President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Kiev's allies to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war.
Russian troops have launched a devastating offensive in large parts of the eastern Donetsk region, while diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in the three-and-a-half-year war have largely stalled.
Zelensky said a remote-controlled bomb hit the village of Yarova, about 24 kilometres from the city of Sloviansk, a Ukrainian stronghold several kilometres behind the front line. "Directly on people. Ordinary civilians. Just at the moment when pensions were being distributed,' he wrote on X.
The Ukrainian president released footage showing bodies strewn on the ground and debris. Twenty-four people were killed and 19 others were injured, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. He added that some victims are still being identified by DNA.
"The world must not remain silent," Zelenski said. "The world must not remain inert. A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20."
