Gorgonzola, new record for PDO production

The production of Gorgonzola DOP will reach a record 5,421,517 wheels in 2025. This was announced by the Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Gorgonzola Dop (Consortium for the Protection of Gorgonzola PDO Cheese), which highlights the increase of 2.7% compared to the previous year (equal to 143,796 more wheels) and of 4.68% compared to 2023 (242,542 wheels). For a total production value exceeding 460 million euro, placing it in fifth place among all certified Italian products (PDO and PGI).

"We closed the year 2025 by once again recording an important growth in the production of Gorgonzola DOP, which since 2019 has steadily exceeded the threshold of 5 million wheels,' comments Antonio Auricchio, President of the Consortium. In just fifteen years, it has seen its production increase by a quarter. My applause goes to all the member companies that operate in years made complex by the very high energy costs we incur in Italy, and by the record increase in the cost of milk, having as their only beacon the safety and very high quality of our Gorgonzola. A cheese, known and loved all over the world, that has no rivals if we think thatthe French Roquefort and the English Stilton, among the best known, are produced respectively in about 3 million and one million wheels per year'.

Gorgonzola DOP production peaked in January 2025, with a percentage increase of 5.6% compared to the same month in 2024. In terms of distribution within the consortium territory, which includes 15 provinces straddling Piedmont and Lombardy, both areas are growing, but it is Piedmont that is driving production with 3,962,282 total cheeses (+3.66% compared to 2024), while Lombardy stands at 1,459,235 cheeses produced (+0.26%).

With regard to the two types,the production of Gorgonzola PDO spicy type fell by 5.42% to 698,880 wheels, equal to about 13% of the total, after the record increase recorded last year. Gorgonzola PDO produced with milk from organic farming is confirmed at about 1% of annual production.
