On the Alpine glaciers in search of the last snow that gives excitement

3/6Weekend

Italia. At the foot of the Matterhorn Glacier

Matterhorn

Between Breuil-Cervinia and Zermatt, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ski area is set against the backdrop of one of the most recognisable peaks in the Alps: here, skiing moves between Italia and Switzerland, finding its highest and most scenic point in the glacier. In fact, the lifts take snow enthusiasts up to 3,883 metres, and from here they descend (in the direction of Cervinia) to the wide and sunny Plateau Rosa, where several international teams also peep in the autumn for training in preparation for competitions. The pistes, suitable for different levels, are part of a single ski area that offers 350 kilometres of tracks linking Cervinia, Valtournenche and Zermatt, the exclusive car-free resort on Swiss territory from which one enjoys the most famous view of the Matterhorn. Among the most special experiences is the ascent on the Matterhorn Glacier Ride, one of the world's highest cable cars with panoramic cabins (some of them with transparent floors) and an integral part of the end-of-season winter experience to be had in these mountains, from a visit to the world's highest ice palace (closed for maintenance until the end of March) to the viewing platform under the little Matterhorn that offers a view of 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers from three different countries.
