Lazio: split with Polymarket is now official; sponsorship agreement terminated by mutual consent
The club will be paid the full amount due for the 2026–2027 season
Key points
The partnership between Lazio and Polymarket has come to an end after just four months. Following the decision by the Customs and Monopolies Agency to include the prediction market platform on the list of banned websites, the Rome-based club announced in a statement that the sponsorship agreement had been terminated by mutual consent.
Termination of the contract
The decision to sever ties with the website was taken ‘in light of the new provisions adopted by the competent authorities, which have affected the relevant regulatory framework’.
Combating illegal gambling
In fact, the website has been inaccessible in Italia since 27 July 2026. ADM took this decision as part of its efforts to combat illegal gambling, considering Polymarket to be equivalent to an unauthorised betting operator. Then, on 4 August, the Lazio Regional Administrative Court rejected the urgent appeal lodged by the platform. The Court did not rule on the legality of the ADM’s measure, but merely deferred its assessment due to the lack of the requirement of extreme urgency.
Licensed operators of legal gambling
The Agency’s decision had been welcomed by Agic, the association of the four main legal public gaming concessionaires affiliated to Confindustria, which considered it to be consistent ‘with current legislation and with the measures adopted by other European countries’. Agic also announced that it would “closely monitor the situation to ensure the procedure is effectively implemented” and reaffirmed “its commitment to supporting all initiatives that promote full compliance with current regulations, the upholding of the law and the protection of consumers”.
Payment of the specified amount
In April 2026, Polymarket and Lazio had reached an agreement that made the website the club’s main sponsor. The agreement took effect immediately, featuring the prediction market platform’s logo on the Rome-based club’s shirt from the latter part of the 2025/2026 season until the end of the 2027/2028 season. The agreement was worth a total of over 22 million dollars. The statement released by Lazio announcing the termination of the agreement states that “as part of the settlement agreement, Polymarket will pay S.S. Lazio the full amount provided for in the contract for the 2026/2027 season”.
