Iran, P. Chigi: civilians cannot pay the regime's sins
"The Italia government continues to follow with extreme attention the evolution of the crisis in the Middle East and the risk of further military escalation that could involve the entire Iranian territory, without distinction between strategic, military and civilian targets. Italy reiterates its firm and resolute condemnation of the destabilising conduct of the regime in Tehran: from the missile attacks that threaten the security of the Gulf nations, to the repeated intimidation aimed at compromising freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz - a vital artery for the global economy - to the systematic and brutal internal repression of its own people. However, it is crucial to make a clear distinction between the responsibilities of a regime and the fate of millions of ordinary citizens. Iranian civilians cannot and must not pay the price for the sins of their rulers. The Italia government agrees with the statements already made by the European Union institutions on the need to preserve the integrity of the civilian infrastructure, as well as the safety of the Iranian population, and hopes that a negotiated solution to the crisis can be reached soon". This was stated in a note issued by Palazzo Chigi.

Tehran army source: surprises for Trump, oil facilities among targets
"We have prepared some nice surprises for a possible Trump folly; one of them is the addition of the Aramco oil facilities, Yanbu oil facilities and the Fujairah pipeline to Iran's target list. In case of a Trump crime, Iran would not hesitate to inflict heavy losses on the US and its allies'. This was said by an Iranian military source according to the Tasnim Pasdaran-affiliated agency. "But if Trump wants to plummet from one abyss to another with his madness, we have prepared for him a black hole from which it will be impossible for him to get out."

In order to allow diplomacy to take its course, I urgently request President Trump to extend the deadline by two weeks. This is the appeal launched on X by the Pakistani premier, Shehbaz Sharif. "We also urge all parties to the conflict to observe a ceasefire everywhere for a fortnight, in order to allow diplomacy to reach a final conclusion to the war, in the interest of peace and long-term stability in the region," he added.

It is a moral issue for the sake of the whole people. I would like to invite everyone to think in their hearts truly of so many innocents, so many children, so many elderly people, totally innocent, who would also be victims of this escalation of a war that has already begun in days". The Pope said this at Castel Gandolfo.

Israel coordinates with US on scenarios after Trump ultimatum expires
Israel is preparing for a range of scenarios ahead of the 8pm (Washington time, 2am in Italia) deadline for US President Donald Trump's ultimatum to Iran, ranging from a ceasefire or interim framework agreement to a potential extension of attacks beyond those already carried out by Israel and the US. This is reported by Channel 12, according to which senior officials describe the coming hours as "dramatic", amid fears that Washington and Tehran may reach a last-minute agreement that does not fully address key issues, particularly Iran's nuclear programme, and may not protect all Israeli interests. At the same time, officials said that if the deadline set by Trump were to expire without an agreement, it would open an "extraordinary window of opportunity" to target Iran's energy, electricity and other national infrastructure that has not yet been targeted. Israel and the US have reportedly already coordinated the division of targets. Meanwhile, the mediators, namely Qatar and Pakistan, are reportedly continuing their efforts to reach a compromise that could at least prevent escalation.

Tehran: 'Trump threats of civilisation destruction are a sign of ignorance'
Iranian government spokeswoman, Fatemeh Mohajerani, called US President Donald Trump's threat to "destroy Iranian civilisation" a "sign of ignorance" that is not conducive to opening a dialogue. Mohajerani - interviewed by the official Irna news agency - said that "maintaining peace and the security of citizens is the government's priority, and threats will not disturb public calm". "The door of dialogue opens with respect; the narrow path of threats, meanness and humiliation is not a way in," he added. Pakistan 'Unwavering support for Riyadh against Iranian attacks'
Pakistan condemned the missile attacks launched by Iran against the energy infrastructure of Saudi Arabia, calling such attacks a threat to regional stability. Indeed, Saudi authorities reported that several projectiles were intercepted, although some debris fell near important industrial facilities, raising concerns about the security of energy infrastructure in the Gulf. In an official statement, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry expressed 'deep concern' over the escalation and reiterated its 'unwavering support' and solidarity with the Saudi people. Prime Minister Sharif, in a telephone conversation with Crown Prince bin Salman, reiterated Islamabad's strong support for Riyadh, emphasising that Pakistan would stand 'shoulder to shoulder' with the Kingdom during the crisis. These developments come in the context of a strategic mutual defence agreement signed by the two countries in September 2025, which stipulates that any aggression against either state will be considered an attack against both.

According to a US official, the White House's approach has changed in the last few hours: from "can we find an agreement" to "can we find one by 8pm?". Judiciary in Iran calls for speeding up death sentences
The head of Iran's judiciary urged the courts to speed up death sentences in cases related to the war against the US and Israel. "It is necessary to continue issuing judicial verdicts against elements and agents of the aggressor enemy with greater speed" by enforcing espionage laws, he added. Since the beginning of the conflict on 28 February, triggered by the joint Israeli-US attack on Iran, seven people have been hanged after being convicted in cases related to January's violently repressed anti-government protests. Six people were executed for belonging to the outlawed opposition group Mojahedin of the Iranian People (Mek), and an Iranian-Swedish citizen was executed for spying for Israel. Madrid, no indication of US retaliation
"Nothing indicates" that the United States is carrying outretaliation against Spain. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said this in an interview with broadcaster LaSexta. The minister argued that"it would not make sense" to carry out reprisals "for a sovereign decision of a country that takes place in compliance with treaties", referring to Spain's decision to prohibit the US from using the shared bases in Rota and Moron to support military operations against Iran. Albares said that the bases operate in compliance with the agreements between Spain and the US and recalled that they remain under Spanish sovereignty. The minister pointed out that the government has no plans to review the Agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United States of America on Cooperation in Defence that establishes the conditions of the US military presence in Spain and the use of the two bases.

This was said by Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani ahead of the vote at the UN, stressing that Iran uses Hormuz as a "political and economic pawn"."Its international importance," he explained, "lies in the fact that it serves as a transit route for some 38% of the world's crude oil trade, 29% of liquefied petroleum gas, 19% of liquefied natural gas and 20% of refined petroleum products, including high-sulphur oil, which is an essential component in the production of fertilisers.

"These treaties have always constituted the backbone of our security system, the archetype of a defence system that in the broader context of the Atlantic alliance has allowed us to live peacefully in prosperity," he added, "and represents the only credible deterrence and defence system today. Even some of the political forces that I sometimes hear criticised, clamouring for a review of the treaties, have always acted within the framework of those treaties, in scrupulous compliance with them, without ever denying the use of Italian bases to American forces, and perhaps even without the transparency that some in this recent affair have wanted to adopt'.

Ft, war already cost the US between 22.3 and 31 billion
The war against Iran is said to have cost the US between $22.3 and $31 billion to date, and about a tenth of that amount - between 2.1 and 3.6 - is the cost of destroyed military equipment. This is according to an analysis by Elaine McCusker, senior researcher at the American enterprise institute (Aei) and former high-level Pentagon official, reported by the Financial Times. According to the expert, 'US losses of soldiers and materiel are low by the standards of wars in which the two sides are more evenly balanced, but Iran's destruction of expensive US radar systems has made Washington more vulnerable in the event of future conflicts in other theatres, such as China,' the Ft. McCusker's calculations include the cost of deploying additional US assets to the Middle East since the end of December and between $2.1 billion and $3.6 billion for damage to date and equipment replacement. Here the biggest expenses were thecost of repairing the USS Gerald R Ford, an aircraft carrier withdrawn for maintenance after a fire in the laundry, and the price of repairing a ballistic missile early warning system damaged by a drone in Qatar.

Axios: Trump 'bloodthirsty', Vance and mediators push for negotiations
The countdown to 8 p.m. American time (2 a.m. in Italia) has begun: within a few hours it will be clear whether US President Donald Trump will make good on his threat to 'wipe out an entire country overnight' or whether he will still grant time to the negotiations underway through international mediators. Trump has outlined a scenario that would involve the systematic destruction of bridges and power plants by midnight, while - according to reports to Axios from administration and defence sources - an operational plan would already be ready, with potentially devastating consequences for the civilian population and the risk of large-scale retaliation. Again according to administration sources, it would be Trump himself who is among those most inclined to take a hard line: 'The president is the most bloody-minded, like a rabid dog,' says one official, downplaying the idea that it is others - such as Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, 'two doves compared to the president' - who are pushing him towards action. The president has also reportedly begun probing advisors and allies on the possibility of striking Iranian strategic infrastructure, going so far as to call the plan 'Infrastructure Day'.

Pentagon identifies dual military and civilian sites to overcome possibility of war crimes
The Pentagon has extended the list of energy infrastructures to be hit in Iran if Tehran does not accept Donald Trump's ultimatum expiring at eight o'clock this evening (two in the morning in Italia) to include in particular dual sites for the use of civilians but also the military, so as to overcome the possibility of committing war crimes highlighted by the chorus of criticism that, not only in Tehran but also in Europe, followed the President's Saturday post, with its threat to strike civilian targets, a threat reiterated yesterday when Trump spoke of the destruction of every bridge and every energy plant in Iran. Two different sources cited by the news site Politico reveal that US military planners arerevising the list to make the choice of targets legitimate. The new option, which is the path also chosen by Israel, may provide the White House with the ploy to overcome the critical moment in the war, after five weeks of raids and the regime in Tehran still standing, the sources point out. Although not everyone in the Pentagon agrees. Some dispute the idea that a water desalination plant could, for example, be considered a military target since even the military has to drink water to hydrate itself. "Do you know what is really a war crime? Possessing the nuclear weapon. Allowing a toxic country with a demented leadership to have the nuclear weapon. That is a war crime," Trump said yesterday at an Easter event at the White House.

"The current agreement allows the United States to use bases in the UK for the collective defence of the region, including defensive operations to reduce missile capabilities used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz," the spokesman added.

This was reported by Axios, according to which Ansari will seek Hegseth's dismissal for his handling of US operations in the Iran conflict. For the Iranian-American MP, the Defence Secretary has 'repeatedly violated his oath of office and his duty under the Constitution', authorising 'war crimes' and 'endangering the US military', which are considered 'valid grounds for impeachment and removal from office'. Ansari also called on the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove US President Donald Trump from office due to his 'delusional statements on war', stating that 'the government should use it' because 'the fate of American troops, the Iranian people and the very foundations of our global system are at stake'.

Wp: 'US journalist imprisoned pro-Iranian in Iraq, possibly used as a shield'
Shelly Kittleson, the American journalist kidnapped last week in Baghdad, is reportedly still alive and held captive by a local paramilitary group with links to Iran, Iraqi security officials told the Washington Post. Kittleson has not been heard from since 31 March, the day she was kidnapped, recalls the US newspaper, and her condition is unknown. US and Iraqi officials believe she is being held captive by Kataib Hezbollah in Jurf al-Sakhar, its stronghold about 60 kilometres south of Baghdad, possibly to prevent US air raids in the area, according to three people familiar with the situation. Kataib Hezbollah, considered the most powerful militia in Iraq, has not publicly claimed his abduction, provided evidence of his survival, or made any demands in return for his release. The Wp has received no comment from either the FBI or the State Department. US officials are urging their Iraqi counterparts to take action against the Shia militia, sources said. Shia politicians in the region are in contact with the group and are trying to obtain Kittleson's release. In the context of the war against Iran, US forces have launched air strikes on Jurf in recent weeks, killing militia members. After the kidnapping of Kittleson, the attacks reportedly ceased.

Iran, media: Moscow provided energy infrastructure list in Israel
According to information obtained by the Jerusalem Post from a source close to Ukrainian intelligence, Russian intelligence services have provided Iran with a detailed list of 55 critical energy infrastructure targets in Israel. The sites identified - it is explained - would be divided into three categories according to their strategic importance: critical production facilities whose destruction would cripple the national energy system; major urban and industrial energy centres; and local infrastructure. Since Israel is a sort of 'energy island' that does not import electricity from neighbouring countries, Russian intelligence has reportedly informed Iran that damage to even a few central components could trigger a total and prolonged energy collapse, resulting in mass blackouts and technical failures that would be difficult to repair.

Iranian envoy to the UN: 'Trump statements provocation to terrorism'
US President Donald Trump's belligerent statements on the destruction of Iranian infrastructure are a direct provocation to terrorism, Iran's representative to the United Nations Saeed Iravani said. "The deliberate attack on non-military centres, including essential infrastructure, constitutes a war crime and is a clear act of state terrorism." Iravani made this statement in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday evening. Iravani also criticised Trump's statements about sending weapons to Kurdish dissident groups, saying: 'This is a sign of the US attempt to instigate violence and internal unrest in the country'. In another passage of his letter, the Iranian envoy to the UN urged the UAE and Saudi Arabia not to allow the US to use their territory to attack Iran. "Iran has the right to legitimately defend itself," he added.

France: Not the first ultimatum set by Donald Trump
"This is not the first ultimatum set by the American president". This was ironically pointed out by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, interviewed by FranceInfo. Last night, Donald Trump gave Iran until this evening to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to free movement. This is 'a common good that must be preserved: we oppose any attack on civil infrastructure. It applies in the region, it also applies in Ukraine,' the minister added. "We oppose it because this is excluded from the rules of war and because it would open a new phase of escalation in Iran, in the region, and would drag the world into a damaging circle," Barrot stressed, "The risk is simply that the civilian population and the world economy would witness a regional fire without limits, which would cause serious damage."

Europe's four options for Hormuz

"Europe's options for Hormuz: few and risky". This is how the New York Times summarises the Western impasse over the Strait through which some 20% of the world's oil and gas passes, while the war in Iran continues to have global effects. The analysis opens with a proposal by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, presented at a videoconference meeting organised by the UK in recent days: the creation of a "humanitarian corridor" to ensure the safe passage of fertilisers and essential goods, in an attempt to prevent the conflict from producing famine in Africa. The plan, one of several proposals that also emerged outside Europe, was not approved and the meeting ended without a concrete agreement to reopen the strait, neither militarily nor on other fronts.
Pressure from the United States remains on the table. According to the American newspaper, European leaders are urged by President Donald Trump to commit military resources, end the blockade imposed by Iran, and contain an energy and economic crisis that is worsening by the hour. So far, however, Europe has not taken up the call to send warships and continues to discuss how to unblock Hormuz. The difficulty in finding a common line reflects both the slow pace of European diplomacy and the large number of countries involved, including those in the Gulf, who are interested in securing the strait once the war is over. Many states, including Italia and Germany, also insist that any initiative must come under the umbrella of the United Nations, a condition that risks slowing down action even further.

Pessimism is growing among negotiators about whether Iran will accept President Donald Trump's demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by the deadline set by the White House. US officials reportedly believe that the gap between the US and Iran is still too wide to be bridged within the timeframe, fuelling fears of military escalation. Several US officials believe that a possible attack order against Iranian energy infrastructure could come soon after the deadline set by the president.
