Mercedes GLC EQ, the electric suv opens a new chapter in the brand's history

Mercedes is relaunching electric SUVs with the GLC EQ. Replacing the little-used EQC, the new car will, from next spring, compete mainly against the new iX3, the progenitor of Bmw's Neue Klasse. At Mercedes, the GLC EQ is also the progenitor of a new model generation. In fact, it is not a clone of the thermal GLC but a completely new model that, like those in the new CLA compact range, which in Munich is present with the new Shooting Brake, testifies to Mercedes' stylistic and technological transformation. And, to complete the picture, it concerns both electric vans and vans as well as the AMG range which is becoming increasingly electrified, inspired by the world of Formula 1, as confirmed by the GT XX concept also exhibited at the IAA Mobility in Munich.

Mercedes GLC EQ, the front end says it's all new

.

The silhouette of the new electric suv is a little more flowing than that of the current GLC, but the dimensions are larger as the length reaches 4.84 metres, width 1.91 metres, height 1.65 metres while the wheelbase increases to an impressive 2.97 metres. The appearance of the electric GLC is the result of a new stylistic course. A course conveyed by the impact created by the evolution of the most iconic component of Mercedes design: the grille. In fact, it projects tradition into the future by becoming a purely aesthetic element, abdicating the chrome trim strips that over time have gone from vertical to horizontal and becoming a sealed panel, as indeed the type of electric car dictates, which will also be offered in a version lit by 942 LEDs that can also give rise to animations, even to launch warnings and information to other road users. Just as the front and rear light signatures do. The GLC EQ therefore exudes an expression that no other Mercedes has, but that future ones will have. The line is defined by soft surfaces with fewer edges than those of the GLCs with thermic engines, the belonging to the SUV galaxy is conveyed by the muscular wheel arches and the sporty character both by the attention paid to aerodynamic profiling, although aimed above all at optimising efficiency, and by the spoiler at the end of the roof.

Mercedes GLC EQ, is a concentrate of advanced hi-tech

.

Before we get into the cockpit of the GLC with EQ technology as Mercedes calls it, let's take a look at its X-ray. This model is based on the new MB.EA platform for native electric models developed for mid-size and large models, which is capable of handling up to 670 horsepower, incorporates a new advanced digital architecture and is suitable for both single-engine two-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive versions. Just like the version with which the battery-powered GLC makes its debut in Munich: the 400 4Matic, powered by a 489-horsepower powertrain with a two-speed gearbox that kicks in according to driving conditions and the car configuration used. The former supports fast acceleration, towing capacity and efficiency in traffic; the latter high-speed running. The 800V electric architecture incorporates, in the case of the 400 4Matic, a high-density lithium-ion battery of the same generation that debuted with the CLA full-electric with a net capacity of 94 kWh. It promises autonomies of up to 713 kilometres, is rechargeable from 10 to 80 per cent DC with up to 330 kW in 22 minutes and a reset to travel 300 kilometres in 10 minutes. This GLC touches 210 per hour and reaches 100 km/h 4"3, against an average consumption (at type approval stage) of 14.9-18.8 kWh/100 km. Other technologies include the one-pedal mode for regenerative braking, all-wheel drive which in Sport mode distributes power more to the rear and equally to the two axles with the Terrain, rear-steer and optional Airmatic suspension.

Mercedes GLC EQ, inside classic elegance marries extreme digitisation

The dimensions of the bodywork together with the length of the wheelbase and the flat floor of the passenger compartment due to the layout of the MB.EA platform result in a very spacious interior, as well as a cargo area with a capacity ranging from an impressive 570 to 1,740 litres, plus a 100-litre front cargo area. The environment is completely detached from those of all other Mercedes thanks to the new evolution of the Mbux operating system supported by MB.EA, from which comes the Hyperscreen moulded into the front of the entire dashboard. More than 99 centimetres long and with a 39.1-inch display, it seamlessly combines the screens of the digital dashboard, the multimedia system and the one in front of the passenger. The system has a clear interface and leaves many controls in view. In addition, the maxi-display can be configured to generate lighting scenes, which determine different interior atmospheres. The furnishings are developed in a rather classical manner but also offer a new interpretation of the central tunnel and are also made of materials that are certified vegan, even in the touch zones, but to which more traditional ones can be alternated.
