Millstätter See: to be savoured at a leisurely pace

Carinzia Millstätter See–Bad Kleinkirchheim–Nockberge

The triangle formed by Millstatt am See, Bad Kleinkirchheim and the Nockberge mountains, in the heart of Carinthia, offers one of the most comprehensive alpine holiday experiences, even as summer draws to a close. A region where the lake and the mountains are two sides of the same journey: for those who love water-based activities, there’s a real spoilt-for-choice between a boat trip, a kayaking excursion or simply a swim, whilst for cycling and walking enthusiasts, it’s the southern shore of Lake Millstatt that offers the most interesting routes. To explore this region, you can follow the Slow Trails, a network of routes designed to help you discover the area via short walks, with a maximum length of 10 kilometres and gentle gradients, often featuring a stretch of water where you can take a dip or cool your feet. Bad Kleinkirchheim, on the other hand, is a spa town and gateway to the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, nestled in an alpine landscape of soft, rounded contours, very different from the more rugged peaks of the Alps. Here, the mountains are just as suited to trekking as they are to cycling, offering the chance to alternate a day on the trails with a visit to the thermal baths. The experience at the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve is a tribute to a region where forests, pastures, alpine pastures and local communities coexist in perfect balance, and where you can enjoy your trip even without a car, using public transport, ski lifts, bicycles and footpaths.
