From Monte Carlo to Croatia: close destinations for a short-haul experience
Montecarlo at a leisurely pace amid scenic gardens and haute patisserie rituals
Its proximity to Italia is certainly a plus, but in spring the Principality of Monaco also offers a mix of factors that combine the Mediterranean landscape and a proposal of experiences marked by elegance and make it a definitely attractive destination for those who want (and have the possibility) to treat themselves to a weekend out of the ordinary. The longer days and mild climate invite one to wander around the harbour, the gardens and the more modern quarters, alternating moments in the open air with breaks in cosy spaces. Tea time, in particular, takes on a special value for experiencing Monte Carlo from a more intimate perspective, offering visitors the perfect idea for a break between a stroll along the waterfront and shopping. From the luminous interiors of the Hôtel Hermitage and its atmospheric winter garden Le Limùn, which recalls the atmosphere of an ocean liner's deck to cafés offering haute French gastronomy (such as Le Petit Café Robuchon and the Cedric Grolet Monte-Carlo located on the patio of the Hôtel de Paris) or convivial moments in Anglo-Saxon style (at Marlow's) and Parisian style (at the Café Fauchon inside the Métropole Shopping Monte-Carlo), the afternoon becomes an opportunity to taste selected blends and refined pâtisserie in settings that differ in style and atmosphere. For lovers of the genre, spring brought with it the reopening of one of Monaco's landmarks after a lengthy redevelopment, the Jardin Exotique, a historic botanical space overlooking the Mediterranean, first inaugurated in 1933 during the reign of Prince Louis II. The path, which has been made more accessible and safer, passes through a collection of plants from different continents and leads to some of the most striking viewpoints on the Côte d'Azur. The visit to the garden can end in the Observatory Cave, which can be visited accompanied by a guide and where a rich collection of limestone concretions can be admired.
