Piedmont. Wonders of light in Baveno and experiences in the Borromeo Lands

On Lake Maggiore, summer nights come alive thanks to the combination of the magic of light displays and the starry sky. It all takes place on the Baveno lakeshore with the third edition of the festival that enchants Lake Maggiore. An impressive 50-metre water stage comes to life with majestic illuminated fountains dancing to the beat of the music, transforming the lakeshore into an evocative open-air theatre (three performances: 9.30 pm, 10.00 pm and 10.30 pm). On Sunday 23 August, light will join the dance of the water in a spectacular drone show to bid farewell to summer amidst lights, colours and excitement. If you’re visiting the area, you can discover the many attractions offered by the Borromean Lands, with their fascinating museums, historic gardens and parks, on an ideal itinerary that takes in the Borromean Islands, Pallavicino Park, Mottarone Park and the Castles of Cannero. In the latter, for example – off the Piedmontese coast, towards the Swiss border – the open-air museum experience, set amongst the restored spaces of the 15th-century fortress, was recently awarded the Gold – Design Intelligence Award (Dia) 2025 by the China Academy of Art in the Cultural Innovation category.  Then there is the Rocca di Angera, which, overlooking the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, is a rare example of a perfectly preserved medieval fortress. 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the removal of the frescoes from Palazzo Borromeo in Milan and their subsequent transfer to the Sala delle Cerimonie, a special occasion to retrace the history and events of that era. For those dreaming of a complete immersion in peace and the wonders of nature, the answer is the oasis of Parco Pallavicino. The garden, with its blooms and ancient trees, the farm and the areas home to numerous species of animals – from alpacas to Galloway cattle, from kangaroos to fallow deer – create a stunning setting, particularly for younger visitors. And whilst outdoor enthusiasts and sports lovers can enjoy the trails in Mottarone Park, it’s always a pleasure to explore Isola Madre and Isola Bella.
