Trentino. Notes from the summit with ‘The Sounds of the Dolomites’

The countdown is on for the opening of *I suoni delle Dolomiti* on 24 August (at 12.00, in Val Nana at Malga Tassulla, in the Brenta Dolomites, featuring “Archi, Corde, In-canto’ featuring I Violoncellisti della Scala alongside the Sosat Choir) – a fusion of Alpine tradition and contemporary sounds, enhanced by arrangements by Stefano Nanni. The longest-running music festival (now under the artistic direction of Mario Brunello, it concludes on 3 October with over 18 events) has, since 1995, represented a harmonious blend of mountain peaks, the natural environment and sound. The music leaves the concert halls and reaches the rocks and pastures, peaks and mountain lakes of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, without altering them; it drifts gently amidst the silence and beauty of the landscape. It is the only long-standing festival held in the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All venues are accessible on foot via trails of varying difficulty, and all concerts are free of charge, with the exception of the ‘Trekking dei Suoni’. Based on a visionary idea by Paolo Manfrini – a journalist and cultural director – the festival has, since its very first edition, chosen to do without stages, amplification and large audiences: the concerts take place at high altitude, transforming each event into an immersive and collective experience, where music blends with the landscape and silence becomes a space for listening; the effort of the walk is transformed into a shared experience, and harmony with nature goes hand in hand with respect for the environment and sustainability.
