Pietrapertosa, an angel's flight through the vertical village

It is the highest municipality in Basilicata, at 1,088 metres above sea level, and one of the most recognisable centres in the Lucanian Dolomites. Located in the Gallipoli Cognato Park, Pietrapertosa is distinguished by a unique morphology that is immediately recognisable to the eye, with the dwellings rising directly out of the sandstone rock, following a vertical course that defines the entire urban layout. The historic centre has a network of stairs, alleys and narrow passages that impose a strictly pedestrian visit on tourists. The Quartiere Arabata is the oldest core, characterised by rupestrian architecture and a compact layout of buildings, while the main points of interest include the Mother Church of San Giacomo Maggiore and the Convent of San Francesco d'Assisi, one of the most important religious complexes in the area for its artistic heritage. The mountain and peasant gastronomic tradition is linked to authentic experiences such as the "I Sapori d'Autunno" (Flavours of Autumn) festival, while those who choose to come to Pietrapertosa to appreciate its cuisine should not miss tasting the cruschi peppers, rafanata, cavatelli and frizzuli, as well as dairy products derived from local sheep farms. For lovers of open-air experiences, finally, one of the best known and most sought-after activities is the Flight of the Angel, a system of cableways that connects the village to Castelmezzano; enthusiasts of equipped trails and hiking itineraries, on the other hand, have their points of interest in the Via Ferrata Marcirosa in the Seven Stones Trail and the Twin Rocks Trail.
