Sella Sompdogna, the last outpost in the Julian Alps

The route ends in the easternmost part of the region, in the Julian Alps. Driving up the picturesque and wild Val Dogna, you reach Sella Sompdogna by car, the starting point for a short and easy walk (2.2 km in total) to the small lake of the same name. This small body of water, surrounded by larch and fir forests, lies in a glacial cirque and is a biotope of considerable value, providing an ideal habitat for high-altitude amphibians such as the Alpine newt. From the lake, you can quickly reach the Fratelli Grego Mountain Hut, from where you can enjoy a close-up view of the majestic north face of the Jôf di Montasio. Here too, the beauty of nature stands in constant contrast to historical memory: the wartime structures, the tunnels carved into the rock and the artillery emplacements still visible along the path serve as a reminder of the harshness of life at high altitude during the 1915–1918 conflict.
