From 1 June, Aire members can apply for an electronic identity card in any municipality in Italy
The new legislation allows the more than 6.5 million Italians living abroad to obtain a Cie without going through consular offices, facilitating access and strengthening ties with Italia.

'As of today, Italians registered with AIirecan also apply for the Electronic Identity Card (Cie) at any municipality in Italia,' Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Massimo Dell'Utri announced on his X profile.
'A concrete step to simplify services and strengthen the link with our communities around the world. Less bureaucracy, more proximity to citizens,' the Undersecretary emphasised.
As the Italian Embassy in Vienna points out, following the entry into force of Law no. 11 of 19 January 2026, Italian citizens enrolled in the Anagrafe degli italiani residenti all'estero (Aire), as of 1 June 2026, will also be able to apply for the Electronic Identity Card (Cie)at any Italian municipality, and not exclusively through their consular office.
The Electronic Identity Card will be issued in the same way as applications submitted at consular offices.
