Council of State, stop to the killing of the second wolf in Trentino Lessinia
The suspension is valid until the hearing on 6 November. But the second wolf is safe because the effectiveness of the decree ends in the next few days
Key points
The Council of State halts the killing of the second wolf of theTrentine Lessinia, which risked being killed. The first wolf had been killed on 19 September last, by virtue of a decree of the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, which had obtained the positive opinion of Ispra. The stop is valid until 6 November next, when the collegial meeting of the administrative appeal judges will be held.
Wolf however saved
The previous judgement of the Tar
The region's punitive reaction was triggered by a number of predations of farm animals at Malga Boldera, with the consequent damage to the farmers. The protests of the animal welfare associations, Enpa, Lav and Lndc Animal Protection and WWF, which blamed the insecure securing of the attacked animals, were to no avail.
The Regional Administrative Tribunal had considered the province's choice legitimate, indicating the measure as "sustainable, suitable and necessary in a context of urgency and particular criticality". The decision of the Council of State was welcomed with joy by the associations. "It is a decision that reaffirms the value of the protection of wildlife", commented Lndc Animal Protection in a post. "We will not stop until the logic of the gun as a management tool is ended. Coexistence is built with knowledge and responsibility, not with weapons. Unfortunately, a wolf has already been killed but, thanks to this urgent suspension, at least for now one life is saved. This result represents a fundamental step in the defence of the wolves of Trentino and the right to life of wild animals".
