Stellantis, production in Italia reverses course and grows by 9.5% but many knots remain
Fim-Cisl report on the first quarter of 2026: car volumes recover 22%, commercial production falls, difficult situation at Cassino
Stellantis' production volumes in Italia changed course and in the first quarter of the year there was a 9.5% increase in the number of vehicles produced in the Group's Italian factories. This is revealed by the periodic report by Fim-Cisl, which speaks of 120,366 vehicles on line from January to March 2026. In particular, the number of cars produced grew by 22%, driven by new models, even if the situation at the Cassino plant, for example, remains difficult.
According to the Cisl metalworkers, the year will see a return to 500,000 cars and commercial vehicles, whose volumes, however, fell in the first quarter of the year, by -5.8% compared to the same period in 2025, to 46,525 units. 'We need to start a debate to adjust the industrial plan on the Italian plants and guarantee production missions and jobs in the plants,' stresses Fim national secretary Ferdinando Uliano.
"The positive result for passenger cars is largely determined by the production launch, which took place in the last quarter, of the 500 hybrid in Mirafiori and the new Jeep Compass in Melfi. These models made it possible to recover part of the losses recorded in 2025, without, however, allowing a return to the volumes of previous years, nor to those of 2024,' Fim clarified in a note.
Looking at the production volumes of individual plants, Cassino continues to lose volumes (-37.4%) even compared to 2025, while Melfi (+92.5%), which almost doubles compared to 2025, Turin Mirafiori (+42.4%), Pomigliano (+6.7%) and Modena (+583%) are recovering. The Sevel plant, while remaining the one with the largest production volumes (about 46,525 units, equal to 39% of Italian production), records a decrease of -5.8% compared to the first quarter of 2025, 'mainly due to the adjustment of production capacity related to the new paint shop,' explain the CISL metalworkers.
The recovery in volumes represents a reversal of the trend from the last two negative years, during which production was almost halved compared to 751,384 units in 2023, with almost half of the Group's workforce involved in social redundancies. 2026 should benefit from the full-year production of the 500 hybrid and the new Jeep Compass, as well as the DS8 made in Melfi and the new production of the DS7 and Lancia Gamma, also in the Lucania pole.
