In an increasingly competitive market environment, with the entry of new players, Stellantis in 2023 recorded sales growth of 5.9 per cent in Europe across all segments and powertrains, ending the year in second place in European market sales, with a market share of 18.4 per cent year-on-year (a year ago it was 18.6 per cent, at the end of 2022 it was just above in 20 per cent). The commercial vehicle segment has a market share consistently above 30 per cent, with the Stellantis Pro One business unit leading the field. In the main European markets, sales were up year-on-year: +10.6% in Italy, +2.2% in France, +5% in Germany, +3.5% in Spain and +16.8% in the UK. Results were also positive in the rest of Europe, with significant growth in Belux, Ireland, Portugal and Switzerland. Overall, France, Italy and Portugal led in overall sales, while France, Portugal and Spain led in sales in the electrified market.
In the battery-powered vehicle (Bev) market, where it competes with models such as the Fiat 500e, Opel Corsa electric, Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-208 (and the 3008 produced on the Stla medium platform is on its way), Stellantis is growing rapidly, with a 14% increase over 2022 and a 14.2% market share in Europe, excelling in various Bev segments. "Looking back on the extraordinary year just ended, the 2023 sales results confirm us as the fiercest competitor for the top step of the podium," commented Uwe Hochgeschurtz, Stellantis' chief operating officer for Wider Europe, emphasising that "by securing the Bev market leadership we are not just setting the pace, but setting the standard to beat."
The overall results indicate a positive transition from 2023 to the new year, reflecting the general trend in the major European countries. As the leading car manufacturer in France, Stellantis excelled in the electrified vehicle market, achieving an important share of 27.4%, a significant increase over 2022, and outperforming its main competitor in the Bev market by 4 points. In Italy, Stellantis emerged as the absolute market leader, ending 2023 with a 45.5% share in the commercial vehicle sector.
The fourth largest car manufacturer is strengthening its leadership in the energy transition: one in four electrified vehicles and half of all electric commercial vehicles are Stellantis-branded. Positive results also come from Germany, where Stellantis has consolidated its position as the second largest car manufacturer. The Opel Corsa continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the B-segment for the third consecutive year, reaching its highest level of registrations since 2016. In addition, Stellantis leads the commercial vehicle market for the fourth consecutive month.
On 3 January, Stellantis reported sales figures in a very important market, the United States. The manufacturer of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram reported a sales decline of 1% in 2023. The carmaker sold 1.527 million new vehicles last year, down from about 1.547 million sold in 2023. In the fourth quarter, Stellantis' sales dropped by 1%. Dealers sold nearly 344,000 vehicles, down from nearly 348,000 in the fourth quarter of 2022.
