Baroque San Luis Potosí Unesco World Heritage Site

La Cattedrale illuminata di San Luis Potosí

The capital of the region, San Luis Potosí, founded in 1592 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves intact vestiges of past opulence, especially in its historical centre around the Plaza de Armas. Here stands the Metropolitan Cathedral, built in Baroque style between 1670 and 1730, which houses an extraordinary collection of sacred art and sculptures of the twelve apostles carved in Carrara marble. The Government Palace, on the other hand, is in the Neoclassical style and is open to the public. Plaza de los Fundadores is also valuable for the prestigious buildings facing it, such as the Central University Building, the Tabernacle Church and the Jesuit Church of Loreto with its splendid Baroque façade. Admiring the avant-garde Edificio Ipiña, we head for the Jardin de San Francisco, which surrounds the Baroque-style temple of the same name, and then visit the Museo Regional Potosino, rich in archaeological evidence. The Templo del Carmen also exalts the uniqueness of Mexican Baroque, while the nearby Teatro de la Paz, a Porfirian neoclassical building with French influence, represents the cradle of culture in the entire region.
