From Boston to San Francisco: places to commemorate 250 years of US independence
In Charleston for the International African American Museum
Another unmissable destination is the International African American Museum, situated in the part of South Carolina where almost half of all African prisoners arrived in the United States. This cultural space traces the stories of how Africans and African Americans, through their labour, resilience and ingenuity, have shaped every aspect of the world. With memorial gardens honouring African ancestors, sections focusing on design, a collection of 150 historical artefacts, 50 films and dozens of interactive experiences, visitors are offered a deeply meaningful immersion in the vital contribution made by people who came from afar. Charleston is also home to the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, where historic Navy ships are moored, although the site is currently only partially open. Meanwhile, the full tour of the Aquarium is available, where visitors can establish an almost direct connection with over 5,000 animals representing South Carolina’s rich biodiversity, through interactive programmes, immersive exhibitions and breathtaking views of the waterfront: at its Sea Turtle Care Centre – a fully operational hospital dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured sea turtles back into the wild – children and adults alike can truly learn the value of caring for the most endangered species in the world’s oceans.
