The New York mayoral race
The New York mayoral race / Andrew Cuomo
Born in 1957, a lawyer, former governor of the State of New York from 2011 to 2021, Andrew Cuomo is attempting a political comeback in this election after resigning over allegations of sexual harassment. The son of Mario Cuomo, a long-time Democratic leader and governor for more than a decade, he grew up in Queens in a family of Italian descent.
After losing the Democratic Party primary, he ran as an independent, trying to win over the moderate electorate and part of the Republicans. His programme focuses on safety and public order, with a proposal to hire 5,000 new officers for the New York Police Department and to build affordable housing for different income brackets.
He presents himself as the experienced candidate, capable of restoring stability. His supporters include the outgoing mayor Eric Adams and part of the Jewish community, worried about the rise of his Muslim and socialist opponent. In the latest polls he has around 33%, second only to Mamdani. His race is also seen as an attempt to rehabilitate himself with a view to a possible return to the national political scene, perhaps even ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
