The New York mayoral race
The New York mayoral race
On Tuesday 4 November New York returns to the polls to elect a new mayor.
After the early retirement of outgoing mayor Eric Adams, overwhelmed by scandals and declining support, the match for New York mayor has become a three-way affair: Democrat Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo (independent candidate) and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
In the Democratic primary in June, Mamdani surprised everyone by beating Cuomo, then favourite, to win the party's nomination with a strongly progressive campaign focused on social justice and rights. After the defeat, Cuomo chose to run as an independent, focusing on experience and the issue of security to win back the votes of the centre.
The third candidate is Republican Sliwa, who remained in the race despite calls from the conservatives to withdraw so as not to split the anti-Mamdani front. According to the latest polls, the Democratic and Socialist candidate leads the race with around 41-43% of the vote, followed by Cuomo (33%) and Sliwa (between 14 and 24%).
