Uncharted Estonia: from lively Tallinn to the enchanting world of the Baltic islands
The social ritual of the sauna
No trip to Estonia can be considered complete without experiencing the sauna ritual, a cornerstone of daily life that has also been recognised by UNESCO. Far from being a solitary experience, the sauna is a time for socialising and conversation. Whilst traditional smoke saunas are favoured in rural areas, in the city the custom takes on original forms. In Tallinn’s trendy Kalamaja district, for example, the venue Heldeke! offers a unique concept that combines a theatre-bar – featuring cabaret shows, stand-up comedy and artistic performances – with a classic communal sauna. It is an informal space where you can warm up, socialise and enjoy the evening’s cultural programme, embodying the Estonian ability to blend historical traditions with contemporary social life.
