The Way of St Benedict: a journey through monasteries and places of worship

The Way of St Benedict, who is regarded as the patron saint of Europe, links two of the most significant sites in the saint’s life. The route passes through Subiaco and Montecassino, a journey dotted with numerous monasteries and places of worship. These include the monastery of St Benedict and St Scholastica in Subiaco, the Certosa di Trisulti in Collepardo, the Abbey of Casamari and that of Montecassino, which was rebuilt after its destruction during the Second World War. In these places, many centuries after their foundation, a profound sense of spirituality still pervades the air. The route winds its way through natural landscapes of rare beauty, such as the Upper Aniene Valley, the Ernici and Simbruini Mountains – which form the regional park of the same name – and the wild Melfa Gorges. Along the route, one can also admire numerous remains of Roman civilisation: from aqueducts to arches, to ancient roads paved with cobblestones.
