The steady growth of the Maio family’s restaurants, which are now expanding to Monte Rosa
Led by brothers Alessandro and Massimo Maio, the Group – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a turnover of 25 million euros – is focusing heavily on catering, opening a new restaurant every 24 months, refurbishing its premises every year and completely renovating them every five years, investing at least 500,000 euros a year.
From the kitchen of a restaurant in the Vercelli area to the food courts at La Rinascente and catering for luxury events: starting from scratch and without taking on any other partners, over the course of 50 years, the Maio family has built up a specialised group with 350 employees (and peaks of over 500 staff during the Salone del Mobile in Milan) and a turnover in excess of 25 million euros.
The family owns 11 restaurant complexes , which serve an average of 70,000 customers a month, and a catering service that handles over 1,500 events a year. The group, led by brothers Alessandro and Massimo Maio, opens a new restaurant every 24 months, refurbishes its premises every year and carries out a full refurbishment every five years, investing at least 500,000 euros a year.
All the new developments for 2026 are centred on Alagna Valsesia, where the group has taken over the Chäisscheri, the popular venue situated at the base of the Monterosa Ski lifts, where it already ran the kitchen. In a few days’ time, there will be the soft opening of the Bisa bistro, the first of two venues housed in the new Mountain Village in Alagna Valsesia, the luxury hospitality project that will be fully operational from next winter season and will also be home to a Maio Restaurant.
“The Alagna project is strategic because it allows us to operate even during the off-season compared to catering or restaurants in the city,” explains the group’s managing director, Claudio Tronci. “And we are also delighted to contribute to the revitalisation of this destination, where a network of entrepreneurs has been established who believe in the area’s potential.” Starting with the Maio brothers themselves, who are at home here and who, whenever they take on a new project, have always wanted to oversee it in person and make their group’s presence felt.
An approach that has set them apart ever since they joined, in 1988, the catering business set up by their parents, Edda and Piero Maio – first with La Bettola and then with L’Angolo di Carisio – and where they brought about an entrepreneurial shift, developing innovative concepts and launching new ventures, such as the catering business, which began in 1998 and soon became one of the pillars of the group’s growth. In 2007, the Maio group then expanded to Milan, opening its restaurant on the top floor of La Rinascente, overlooking the spires of the Duomo. Around this Milanese icon, a dining hub has taken shape, comprising the Be Steak The Grill Bar, which offers the finest cuts of meat and a selection of international salts and mustards, and the Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar, the only one of its kind in Italia.
